  • The Ice Road
Wages Of Fear made by imbeciles. Predictable and stupid as all hell (Neeson's gotta eat, I guess).
Topped off with some racist sjw propaganda garbage as is par for the course in the current year.
Trash. I did like the "evil whitey" bad guy though. He was like a nerdy Terminator. Cartoonishly
    indestructable.

    • Watched season one of BOSCH starring Titus Welliver. I never read the books but I caught an interview with Titus and it looked like something I would like, and it is! So far it's typical detective stuff which is all I'm really asking for. It's not as heavy or as dark as TRUE DETECTIVE but sits somewhere between there and NYPD BLUE. I've already started season 2.

The books by Michael Connelly are absolutely terrific. They get quite dark at times but also have a lot of dark humor too. I like the Amazon series but I think the books are way better. I've read 22 or 23 of them, have just about gotten to all of them.

I imagined that the books were better. This is scratching a certain itch LONGMIRE gave me, and I ultimately liked the books way more than that show. It's also helping fill some time I'd normally spend obsessing over YELLOWSTONE which is looking more like a Fall or late August post-Olympics schedule.

I'm almost done with the second season of BOSCH and it's a big step up from season one and is already a lot darker. The episodes focusing on Lance Riddick's character have been a blast. He was one of the reasons I decided to start watching it and he wasn't in the first season as much so it's nice to see him and his family in the spotlight this season.

It's a really digestible show. Kinda breezy like the LA location. I might have to check out the books when I'm done.

          • The Faculty. I saw this at the cinema when it came out and I don't think I've seen it since. Its a funny rewatch. These were all the hot young teens when I was a teen. I don't even know who are the hot teens these days. Hopefully they have better careers than this lot. I remember all the faces in this but apart from Elijah I don't even remember any of their names anymore. Well Josh Hartnett.. what the fuck happened to him? He was on the verge of having a career. Harry Knowles was in this?! Do you know last year he finally apologised for being a pervert? Or at least for being perceived for being a pervert which I think in his head was the same thing.

Anyway... what was I talking about? Oh yeah, The Faculty. You know this was the second Rodriguez film that heavily referenced The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. I don't think you can make a bad Body Snachers movie. They're like sex and pizza, even when bad they're still kinda good. Think about it. There's the 3 movies called Invasion of The Body Snatchers and they're all at least good. Two of them are great. There's The Thing and that might be the best horror movie ever. Even The Invasion is kind of watchable. I mean it sucks but the foundations are so solid because its a body snatcher movie that its still kind of watchable even if you feel dirty afterwards. There's that 50s Invaders from Mars movie that got remade in the 80s. All solid. And there's this. And this sucks as hard as its possible for a Body Snatcher movie to suck and yet its still arguably the best of that 90s run of teen horror. Anyway... I like Body Snatcher movies. There should be more podpeople flicks.

            • Shudders (Finland, 1965) [VoD] - 1.5/5
The very first Finnish nudie flick, according to the ad materials. A lonely fisherman sees three naked mermaids rising from the sea. Then he wanders around and wonders if it was just a dream. Boobs mostly from one actress, and some very brief full frontal. The narrator dresses it all in dull poetry. The Finnish censorship board showed some sense of humour when they classified this as nature documentary. The rating was General Audiences. Indeed, little excitement here for Finnish audiences used to seeing naked girls on silver screen at least since the early 50s (The Witch, 1952), and seas and lakes long before that.

              Deadlock (West Germany, 1970) [DCP] - 3/5
The past few years have seen a welcome trend of theatrical re-releases in Japan, so far focusing on classics such as Once Upon a Time in the West, Last Tango in Paris, Django, The Hitcher, Sorcerer, Streets of Fire, and the Bruce Lee films. But to give something like Deadlock, that even many genre cinema fans have never heard of, a nationwide theatrical run in 2021 is truly admirable. Reportedly loved by Alejandro Jodorowsky, this dream-like modern Spaghetti Western sets a coward mine worker Mario Adorf, young machine gun killer Marquard Bohm, and Lee Van Cleef type senior killer Anthony Dawson in one deserted town (only populated by Adorf and two mentally disturbed women) to fight over a suitcase full of money. Buddy/enemy bonding, sudden bursts of violence, an awesome score soundtrack by Can, mental insanity, nudity, a hundred shots of the camera pointing in the sun, some cinematically clumsy "how did that happen?" moments, and frankly a too compact setting with the guys running back and forth the same sand fields from start to finish. If it's great, that's up to debate, but it's absolutely good and worth a watch.

              JP Trailer:

              Firecracker (Philippines, 1981) [VoD] - 2/5
Yellow haired warrior Jillian Kesner goes looking for missing little sister in the Philippines, uncovers gangsters smuggling drugs and running deadly martial arts tournaments. A score lifted from Shogun Assassin plays on repeat. Kesner loses her clothes and fights in the nude. She looks good and fights much better than most people in Cirio H. Santiago films. But the storyline is such a bag of cliché that I can't even tell which of his own films he's borrowing from (let's see, saving the sister, that was in TNT Jackson… and in The Muthers… and in Wheels of Fire…and…). There's a fair bit of Enter the Dragon here as well. Had I seen this on VHS back in the 80s, in a country with no abundance of good martial arts films in rental stores, it could have been a nice, exotic piece of action. But it doesn't fare well anymore.

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (USA, 1993) [VoD] - 2.5/5
A pretty watchable entry, with amusing over-the-top scenes and a completely nonsensical storyline, though it has its boring parts as well. Viewed here was the R-rated version, which lacks some violence and removes almost all sex and nudity. 2/5 would probably suffice for this version, but I will round up the film rating on an assumption the unrated print is just that much better.

Yeah, Jason Goes To Hell definitely plays MUCH better in the uncut form. The R-rated cut also lost some key exposition that is sorely missed.

                • Knife+Heart - This LGTBQ-themed giallo homage took me a while to get into and I wasn't really enjoying it, but I'm glad I stuck it out because the final 30 minutes are really extraordinary and pack an emotional punch that I did not see coming.

Incident in a Ghostland - Another surprise gut-punch of a horror film. Once you realize what's actually going on, it's really quite devastating. In it's own way, it's as powerful and punishing as the director's earlier masterpiece MARTYRS. Highly recommended (thanks for the tip, Lorne).

Anything for Jackson - Phenomenal. This is one of the best horror films I've watched this year.

Leprechaun 3 - Exhausting but pretty entertaining entry in the silly series. Lots of weird ideas. The lead actress has enormous boobs. The Leprechaun says: "Where's my shilling?" about 300 times during the movie; at the end I regretted not taking note of how many times he actually did say it.

The Gambler (1974) - Finally got around to checking this out and it's a typically gripping '70s crime drama. You can almost always count on American films from the '70s to be interesting and this one is no exception. It has the same kind of jittery tone as writer James Toback's directorial debut, FINGERS. The ending, especially, is amazing and the last shot is unforgettable.

Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

I love this movie. It makes for a good double feature with CUTTER'S WAY.

I've been watching Jess Franco's NIGHTMARES COME AT NIGHT. I probably had it on ten time already in the past couple weeks and I'm mesmerized each time. I haven't paid enough attention to it to try to figure out a plot, if at all possible, but watching it most nights with only one eye open leaves me to believe it's the most Jess Franco-y of Jess Franco films. It's everything I've been looking for.

                    • Things-Joe Bob's Last Drive In

I had never heard of this film until Bougie talked about it in Cinema Sewer. Tracked down a rip of the VHS watched it and promptly forgot it. Saw Joe Bob aired it as part of the newest season of the Last Drive In.

This was so bad. I made better films in my late teens using action figures as the actors.

                      • I keep rewatching the new GRAND TOUR special, LOCHDOWN. Did anybody else watch this? This shit is brilliant. It's the only thing recently that I actually looked forward to and they're great as always.

Ooh is there a new one! I haven't been on Prime for a while. I find the boys a bit up and down. I think my reaction to a particular special depends on how much I can believe they are suffering genuine hardship rather than working through a script. Sometimes the banter does get a bit rote. They have done the same bit where they make fun of each others cars a good 200 times now. When its good though its great stuff. I loved the one where they went boating in Asia recently.

I watched it, and aside from the dud ending, it was good. I loved the part with them trying to drive pimpmobiles through Edinburgh, and seeing how the mods that May and Clarkson made to their cars fucked them up was amusing.

They don't suffer all that much this time around, they are all getting up there in age. At times it plays like a greatest hits compilation of things we've seen them do before. But I loved every second of it. They travel to Scotland in American cars and the whole thing has an American vibe. I thought the ending was bloody brilliant.
