Anyhoo...House of Usher (1960) -- I'm glad I've finally got around to finally watching the AIP Corman-Poe movies after all these years, as now I can see what all the fuss was about over Vincent Price and his "King of Horror" accolade. Really fine performance from the man in this one, and some really long unwieldly dialogue that he made flow and seem uncannily natural - particularly in the history of the Ushers passage. And best of all, Corman shot for Scope, not in Scope (like the majority of filmmakers today who don't seem to have a clue how to compose for effect or effective use of the 'scope framing). I must say though, American gothic and British gothic have two entirely different characters about them, no?
Funny thing is, if you showed this horror film to kids of today they'd tell you it isn't horror; they'd call it a drama, and a boring one at that. But I loved the whole mood and atmosphere of the film. Where else would you get such an effective picture of encroaching madness from just three lead actors, and one support? A cast of four! Amazing. Corman was a very talented man in his day. ;)

Alien Resurrection. I love the first three films, the assembly cut of Alien 3 being a particular favorite. I keep coming back to Resurrection just hoping it'll be fun. I mean hell, I love so bad it's good flicks and maybe I'd dig it this time? And every time I get to a certain point and think 'this isn't so bad' that the awfulness shows itself. I will say this; the direction, set design, and cinematography is damn good. What kills it is thus: The inclusion of Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder, by the numbers action scenes (some are good I will admit) and some very, very badly done humor. It has a few good set pieces going for it, but that's about it.
In sum: Fuck Joss Whedon."Ah! By god's balls what licentiousness!"
Marquis de Sade, The 120 Days of Sodom.
