  • Last night was Thriller: A Cruel Picture; I hadn't watched it in years. It runs a bit too long & has waaaay too much slo-mo but I'm glad I own it. I'm guessing we'll, most likely, never see a blu-ray unless someone that is filthy rich can pay the director's high asking price & has the patience to deal with him?

Tonight, I think I'll watch Bleeder.

    • Popped the Blue Balloon in the player last night before bedtime. Quite a sleazy little number. Actually pretty good stuff. The fast forward finger only itched once but I stuck with it. Nice theme song too. Tonight I'll revisit Torben and his mischievous hijinx in the XXX cut.

      • I watched Bleeder last night. Such a fun, feel good movie!

I have The Sinful Dwarf out for delivery today. I bought it for The Blue Balloon based on what someone here wrote about it. I know I've seen T.S.D. but remember nothing about it other than the obvious.

Really like this one a lot. One of my favorite TCM/Deliverance type offerings -- and bonus points for its art film sensibility.

I've always had a crush on Kwei Lun-mei since probably Secret & try to catch all her movies regardless of quality.

                • Tokyo Grand Guignol (Japan, France, 2015) [Yubari Fanta] - 2/5
A Tokyo themed horror anthology by four little known French directors. The opening episode is nonsensical but interesting story of a man who finds out he can travel back in time by killing people; one corpse = minus one day. Unfortunately very ugly CGI splatter ensues. The second story is a pretentious giallo. Everything about it feels forced, but it does have a fun "poor man's Goblin" score and some great practical effects. The third story is a harmless romance/fantasy with a tone resembling the 80s Hong Kong gyonsi films. It's not bad, but it does provide further evidence that in nearly every episode film there's one director who feels the need to come up with something that is the polar opposite from what everyone else was doing. Finally, there's is a story where a crazy man is bitten by the Hachiko dog statue (really?) and turns into a werewolf after been locked in a sex club SM dungeon. More CGI crap, albeit with an exotic setting. Overall a disappointing film, but at least it's not too boring.

The Whole Truth (USA, 2016) [DCP] - 3/5
Japan had to wait a small eternity for John Wick, and Knock Knock is still hasn't arrived, but at least this Keanu Reeves flick hit the Japanese screens even before the US release date has been set. Perhaps the US distributor just didn't know what to do with such a TV like movie. Mind you, that's not really a criticism. It's a solid courtroom drama, especially if you like Reeves (like I've recently come to) even though it may not ultimately make as much sense as it should. I needed to kill 90 minutes while waiting for someone and this film did the job fine, although for most people it would probably be a rental rather than cinema viewing.

                  • Dice
Binged the entire season at once. Great stuff here. Very funny and often bizarre. Lorraine Bracco is great as a ballbusting casino boss and Adrien Brody shines as himself trailing Dice to soak up masculinity for a part in a play. The way he slowly turns into Dice over the episode is unsettling to watch and very funny. The quest for his 1989 penis goes into some interesting directions as well. I hope this gets a second season. Dice isn't afraid to lampoon himself or his persona and the guy has always been a good actor deep down. Just stop trying to foist your useless, uninteresting no-talent kids with their shitty ass band upon us if there is a second season.

H.H. is a film I have memories of seeing on cable tv as a young teen. The paper-cutter scene is what stuck with me but I remembered it bloodier than it is.

                      • The Offence. Such a masterpiece. Connery's and even Lumet's best. Such a bleak and downbeat film. Gray rain filled skies, oppressive darkness, pale flourescent light. The emotional complexity. And that flashback montage when Connery's driving in the rain!

I read somewhere the Eureka blu wasn't supposed to look so hot, but to me it's a revelation compared to the crappy non-anamorphic disc I had before. It also has subs, which is a plus for me especially with thick accents.

                        • THE LADY IN THE CAR WITH GLASSES AND A GUN (2015) - Mediocre are best, this overtly stylized thriller never catches you up in its narrative, a fatal flaw in a film like this. It all seems too removed and distant, the characters glossily going through the story. No doubt, the lead, Freya Mavor, is a stunner and isn't bad as an actress but she's just not compelling enough to hang a tale on. The film is stylish to the point of self-consciousness - split screens and so on. Pretty nice retro soundtrack that I felt went into hipsterish territory by using a piece from DJANGO PREPARE A COFFIN (yes, the same one Gnarls Barkley riffed on). Maybe worth one watch if you're curious but pretty shallow stuff.
I don't go to church. Kneeling bags my nylons.

I'd forgotten how much damn fun this film really is. Supremely stupid
and gory in all the right ways. Also... dat ending. The Grindhouse Blu looks
fucking fantastic! I watched it twice in a row and now I think I might have
brain damage. Juan Piquer Simon, you glorious bastard. Bastard! Bastaaard!!!

                            • I watched William Lustig's Maniac last night. I have the AB dvd; is the BU bd a big improvement?

Also watched Razorback a few nights back (AB UK dvd) and Living Dead at Manchester Morgue BU dvd which started freezing up at the end so need to upgrade it for sure.

                              • I watched The Brood last night. Love those creepy 'killer dwarfs'! Too bad the cover art & insert has such awful artwork...

The night before was Blue Underground's dvd of The Toolbox Murders. I had not watched it since the first time when it came out on dvd. It has some rather nasty killings along with the laziest auto crash ever!
