  • The Package is one of the best thrillers, let alone cold war thrillers. Damn good choice Barry!

    • I haven't regretted any of the Kino Lorber blus. Somebody's got an eye for backlist gold there.

      • Lost River (USA, 2014) [DCP] - 3/5
An interesting, if flawed, directorial debut by Ryan Gosling. Something dark and mysterious is going on in a half-deserted small town. Harshly, and unfairly, reviewed by many critics, perhaps because Gosling is considered too handsome to be taken seriously as a filmmaker, especially when his first try isn't a world changing masterpiece. It's a technically well made, endlessly strange, and extremely non-commercial film; the kind of movie that usually doesn't enjoy the solid production values this one has. That being said, Gosling does borrow quite a bit from his idols, and the film especially ends up feeling too much like a David Lynch film. Stealing elements is not a problem per se, but stealing an overall atmosphere from such a unique filmmaker is something you can't really get away with. It's still a pretty good and interesting film, though.

        Class of 1999 (USA, 1989) [DVD] - 3.5/5
A sequel to Class of 1984, only this time with a sci-fi / post apocalypse twist. Schools have turned into battle grounds, students are armed to the teeth, and the streets are full of Mad Max esque battle vehicles. Enter cyborg teachers designed to take care of the violent students. This is pretty lovely trash with fun action throughout and a great 20 minute finale that is pretty much like Commando in high school. Somehow this film also seems to have better special effects than Terminator: Genisys or Jurassic World (based on their trailers; I haven't seen the films).

        • CLASS OF 1999 is a classic movie..watched it countless times.....always fun.
Really want to see LOST RIVER but sounds like has borrowed too heavily from Lynch and Refn....though if you ARE going to steal..thise are the guys to steal from...i huess he just needs to put HIS stamp on it next time...and well done to him for making a non commercial movie of his choice.

          • End of Days. Never saw this Schwarzenegger schlock back in the day and I like Arnold enough to watch all of his films. Finally going to cross this off the list.

            • sharks' treasure

oh boy ... this flick is downright weird - but not in a good way. we get actor/writer/producer/director cornel wilde really wanting to impress god knows who that he was still in great shape at his then old age. doing crazy push-ups on deck and getting on his soap box about the hazards of smoking and drinking any time someone lights a cigarette or lifts a bottle. and as if this wasn't enough he also sings the cheesy title song!
midway into the movie a bunch of ex-cons hijack the boat and we get to know lobo and his personal boy toy from prison, which leads us to this awkward scene ...

last but not least there is footage of the crew butchering more than a handful of sharks. I counted at least 6 shark getting slaughtered (very painful to watch!). did they use stock footage or did they really shoot this stuff just for the movie?

                • A Hitman in London AKA Skin Traffik

Gary Daniels as a hitman who tries to save a trafficked girl and her little sister. Mickey Rourke is in it for 3 minutes looking all bloated and fucked up, a few more minutes are givent to Michael Madsen, Eric Roberts and Jeff Fahey, and they at least don't look quite as fucked up.

Gary Daniels can fight, and the fight scenes are ok, but the rest... my god.... horrible CGI everywhere. CGI gunshots, blood splatter, helicopters out of fucking scale against the background, fire, just about anything that can be ruined with shit CGI is. Also ineptly shot, both in framing, cutting and a general look of poorly coloured cheapness. One of the more incompetent DTV actioners I have seen.

                    • Dangerous Game (Abel Ferrara, 1993) - A misunderstood masterpiece and one of Ferrara's most brilliant and introspective films. Uncomfortably personal and confessional too, especially with Ferrara casting his wife at the time Nancy as Harvey Keitel's wife in the film. While Madonna is rightfully praised for her performance (she actually can act), the real unsung hero of the film is James Russo who's performance is so raw and fierce its a wonder he didn't spontaneously combust during filming. The tirades he goes off on are amazing. "I NEED THESE THINGS!" Amazing acting all around though. The script is one of Nicholas St. John's best, second only to The Addiction in the dialogue department. So sharp and downright venomous at times.

                      • CUB (WELP) (Jonas Govaerts, 2014)

Belgian boyscout campout horror riffs on rural woodsy horrors like THE BURNING, LORD OF THE FLIES and some Stephen King (STAND BY ME, "Casselroque"). The feral kid is cool, and finding the Rube Goldberg horror in the boy scout handbook's deadfalls and snares is inspired. I guess it's pretty racist that the jerks in the movie speak French.

Low budget dtv (I think anyway) monster movie awesomeness. Funny as hell and entertaining all the way through. "Fucketh meee!!! *BOOM!*" This should have a blu-ray release with commentaries and the works. Criminally underrated!

                            • And to keep this on track: A Most Violent Year Nice little thriller, about a new and fresh subject. Good 80s feel and look without resorting to the neon Miami Vice style.
