  • Sopranos (on blu ray) ...I just realized that they don't have the "next on" "previously on" and season recaps. Dagnabit! Maybe when it comes out on 3240p HD brainchip cloud service they can fix that.

    • A MOST WANTED MAN . After I got used to the pacing and the the lighting scheme, this seems like a pretty good John LeCarre adaptation. Nice acting by the cast. LeCarre was also one the producers of the film and is interviewed in the BD extras.

      • Le professionnel (France, 1981) [DVD] - 3/5
An entertaining action film that is actually a bit too humoristic, especially considering Morricone's stunningly beautiful score that sounds like it was composed for a more serious movie. This is more like a Roger Moore era Bond film with a smaller scale and a storyline following an assassin. That being said, it's a fun movie if you don' t try to take it too seriously.

        Rocky III (USA, 1982) [DVD] - 3/5
A bit slow start, but the second half is quite a bit of fun. Stand out moments: Stallone motivating himself by taking punches in the face, Mr. T giving that "real man doesn't act like that" look, and Stallone and Carl Weathers in what is the gayest beach scene since Sonny Chiba and Isao Natsuyagi in G.I. Samurai (1979).

          • Dragan Wende - West Berlin

At midnight on the lesser of the government controlled public service channels I found this. A documentary from a Serbian filmmaker who visits his legendary uncle in Berlin, a man who during the Cold war was a Hussler and Pimp extraordinaire in West Berlin. Nowdays though, the uncle Dragan, is a bouncer at a brothel and likes te reminisce about his glory days.

Many epic quotes like: "That is an ugly shirt, I would not even go take a shit dressed like that!" and "May the sun shine on my testicles tomorrow, in Yugoslavia! - You and Berlin can go fuck yourselves!"

            • Treated myself to an all night Wesley Snipes-athon by watching Murder At 1600 and Art Of War back to back.

Goddamn I like Wesley Snipes. He's just a fantastically solid performer both when it comes to real acting as well as
performing action scenes. I hope he stays out of trouble this time. Both movies are great fun. Art Of War is amazingly
well shot with every frame looking like a gorgeous painting.

I liked the chemistry he has with Diane Lane in Murder At 1600 (who's smoking hot in this). I also like that they don't go
for the usual schtick of having them hook up or becoming a couple at the end. They're just a kick ass team working together.

              • ^^Damn shame Snipes wasn't part of THE EXPENDABLES. He's one the great action stars of his era. I have DROP ZONE sitting on my watch pile and would love to re-visit DEMOLITION MAN.

                • Watched the Criterion release of SAFE this weekend. Very compelling. Excellent ending. Made me really think. The film is so quiet and understated that I felt extremely restless. As soon as the credits rolled I tried to watch the interview with Haynes and Moore. Despite it being very interesting I got so stir crazy that before it was finished I grabbed COMMANDO off my watch pile and hurriedly put it in my player. I desperately needed something shallow and loud to center myself. Explosions! Arnie machine gunning one-liner's delivered the goods like no other film could. I've watched COMMANDO a dozen times and this is the most I've ever enjoyed it. It is absurd in all the right ways with a terrific score.

                  • Mean Guns by Albert Pyun. Or should I say Pew-pew-un,
when it comes to this flick.

Goddamn this was a whole lotta fun! It's much, MUCH too long
yet works surprisingly well. Snappy dialogue, good use of Christopher
Lambert who's awesome in this (apparently he only worked 2 days on
this yet he's sprinkled expertly throughout the film), cool characters
and a SHITLOAD of gunfire/low rent John Woo-esque action.

The blaring mambo music was a little grating to be honest but kudos
for going for something a little more unique. Very much recommended viewing.

                      • MILLENNIUM (extended, blu-ray)

I read the first book (DRAGON TATTOO) and kinda gave up on it, but these Swedish tv adaptations are good. The socialist journalist as hero is a pretty easy sell for me, and I liked the developing focus on "men do shit to women". Although it becomes increasingly improbable as it progresses and backfills the Salander backstory, I really liked the courtroom finale. Does Swedish Joe have a dragon tattoo?

Sweden looks like a great place to visit.

                        • REDNECK COUNTY aka THE GREAT LESTER BOGGS (1974)

Regional Arkansas drive-in EASY RIDER knockoff starts with Dean Jagger (as a ghost?) cameoing a cemetery farewell, followed by a motorcycle sidecar cross-country roadtrip to the heart of America (Beebe). The opening chase is fun, and there's a good bar fight: also contains biplane bootlegging, corn liquor & jokes, a rodeo clown Romeo, shitloads of shattered sugarglass and dynamite jailbreaking. The dog-howlingly great score is about equal parts banjo and wah wah comic trombone.

The Legacy DVD I watched seems to be a DVD-R, the transfer dubbed from a loved-hard and put up wet VHS. Is there a decent version of this? I think Troma put out a disc. Not sure that it needs or deserves one, but I'd probably buy it.

                            • At World's End. A Danish Comedy about a shy psychologist who is sent to Jakarta to investigate the mental state of a danish man who killed 8 BBC employees filming a nature docu. The danish man claims to be 129 years old and to have found the source to eternal life. Much much better then it sounds. Quite a few homages to Rambo II* and the Indiana Jones movies.

*It even co-stars Steven Berkoff and Matthias Hues, to give it that proper Rambo/Rambo ripoff feel.

Shockingly enough, not as bad as the title leads one to belive. Lots of blanks fired, very basic plot. But they did all they could with what little they have, and while not a good film, I liked their effort and commitment.
