I'm a die hard fan of Bullock but another 1h 30mins of this crap might make me suicidal. Good thing her latest "Oh-Look-I'm-Fat-Loud-And-Disgusting-Isn't-That-Funny?"-shitfest seems to be tanking.
You took the words right out of my mouth on this one. I could not make it past 35 minutes. When I shut it off, I was yelling "Shut Up!!"

      • THE BACKWOODS (2006) - This one pretty much flew under the radar and that's too bad. 2 English couples travel to the Spanish countryside for a holiday. The rural folk aren't exactly friendly, and after they discover a strange young girl being held prisoner in a remote cabin nearby, things get even more tense...Gary Oldman is terrific in this film, and the other 3 main characters are impressive as well. This one's got a pronounced kinship with that subgenre of threatening backwoods films, and being set in the 1970s makes it even more so. Not extremely violent but when the bloodletting comes it's pretty disturbing.

        • The Hard Truth (Kristine Peterson, 1994) - Cool caper action/thriller. Not really the type of thing I usually go for but with a dependable director in Peterson and a great cast (Michael Rooker, Lysette Anthony, Eric Roberts) I couldn't resist. Fairly typical of 90's direct to video genre fare but the story is intriguing enough to entertain all the way through. Not Peterson's best but not a bad way to spend an hour and 40 minutes either.

            • SCANNERS (criterion blu-ray) Despite my initial reaction to the screen caps over at DVDBeaver, I went ahead and picked it up during the B&N sale. I think it looks the best that it has ever looked, but it also stays true to my memory of how it looked theatrically.

I mainly wanted to mention that it looked "normal" to me and not so dark as it appears in the screen caps. I do custom set my 50" tv to slightly boost the contrast and slight decrease brightness, so that I get a nice black level, but rarely ever mess with that setting for individual movies, and it was not necessary to do so for SCANNERS. Happy purchase for me, but the extras on the Second Sight blu sound cool as well. Still not a region free dude yet for blu.

              • All You Need is Kill (Edge of Tomorrow) (USA, 2014) [DCP] - 3.5/5
This sci-fi action based on the Japanese manga All You Need is Kill (also the film's title in Japan) is a rare beast among mega-budget Hollywood films: it's a plot driven movie. Typically films of this budget are super hero film and/or SFX fests which may feature a story of some sort, but they are based on epic setpieces or familiar characters. All You Need is Kill does feature the former, but it's mainly based on the plot which is the main attraction. That, with top notch technical execution and unexpectedly solid supporting performance by Emily Blunt makes it an enjoyable film, even if there's a bit too much repetition in the middle third, and the finale scene takes place in the dark (again?). Also a big plus for featuring Bill Paxton in the kind of role he was born to play: an army commander.

Sadly, the film hasn't been a hit. Perhaps that suggests modern audiences don't feel comfortable with movies that feature a plot anymore.

Ha ha ...indeed it does..when shit like TRANSFORMERS AGE OF EXTINCTION makes a BILLION dollars (SO FAR) it truly DOES seem like the modern audience really do not want to THINK when they see a move in the theater....

                  • I've been holding off on watching them until the Criterion Blu was released, but I finally sat down to watch Scanners 2: The New Order and Scanners 3: The Takeover this weekend, and holy hell did I enjoy both of them. Yes, they're a step down from the original in terms of seriousness and craft, but they're much more entertaining and Scanners 3 in particular is just fucking bonkers. I'll be watching these with friends soon.
                    It's all in the reflexes.

                    • Went to see INTO THE STORM last night, it was pretty much what I was expecting - paper thin characters with one or two identifying traits and some fantastic tornado f/x. Those parts were fairly riveting, enough so that I didn't mind the earlier, slower parts. At least one character meets a gruesome, non-explicit death (avoiding spoilers here), and the storm footage is intense. Another positive is it did its thing in 90 minutes so even the build-up didn't take too long. Basically a dumb but well done disaster film.

                        YES!!

Seriously a rarity in this day and age of 3+ hour movies....

Get in ...do the business...then get out.....old school style.

I think this way people would be more forgiving of crap movies.....It wouldn't feel like you wasted your WHOLE life watching a stinker....

                            • RIfftrax GODZILLA (1998) - Saw this last night, pretty darn funny. As unlikely a target as the film seems (yeah, right), they managed to come up with quite a few good lines. As is usual they start kinda slow but the fastballs were popping the catcher's glove pretty loudly by the midway point.Oh, and a THE FISH THAT SAVED PITTSBURGH reference is always cool. I never noticed how many SIMPSONS people are in this before...even Nancy "Bart" Cartwright and her unmistakable voice for a single scene.

Saw GET ON UP, the James Brown bio-pic. The dude that played James will probably receive some awards. Good movie, I recommend it for any music fan.
