      • Had a vicious case of food poisoning that had me wishing for a quick end, once I felt up to it I watched a few flicks:

GENTLEMAN KILLER - Worthwhile Anthony Steffen film with the familiar wayward son proves his mettle story, this time involving revenging the death of a family member. Great scenery chewing villain role for Eduardo Fajardo - lots and lots of maniacal laughter, heh. The Bruno Nicolai title theme is fantastic, makes you wish for a horse to jump on and race off into the sunset.

COLD PREY II - Not bad for a sequel, and probably much better than most US slashers these days but still pales next to the first. Some decent gore in the kills though. It's pretty funny how much this cribbed from HALLOWEEN II - the final girl taken to the hospital (where there's a skeleton crew only), the killer turning up there, stalking through the dark hallways, the FG in a drugged state trying to escape...

VAMPIRE JOURNALS - A feature-length Whitesnake video. Caked with cheese.
I don't go to church. Kneeling bags my nylons.

        • Based on this article from The AV Club I think I'll be checking out Mr. Freedom:

It's not going to suck itself...

I saw that one a while back. It's pretty good, although mostly for its visual inventiveness and as a time capsule of 60's radical politics than as satire (which I found to be a little witless to carry a movie).

Personally, I much preferred "A Model Couple" from the same director (it's also in the Eclipse set with Mr. Freedom)...it's funnier, and had a more sophisticated satire of American culture (not to mention predicting reality TV a couple decades ahead of time.)

Either way, the box is definitely worth picking up.

            • Pink Cadillac. A Clint Eastwood film I have never seen before.

                    • High Anxiety - After taking a film studies class on the films of Alfred Hitchcock where pretentious subtexts were a required reading, it was the most satisfying feeling to just kick back, throw my brain to wall and enjoy this flick with a good understanding of the jokes.

You won't be disappointed. I've only watched season 1 & about half of season 2 but I'm confident in stating the TV series has the same great mix of comedy, swordplay & somber reflection that made the films so good.

Currently re-watching Misumi/Mori's take on the Daibosatsu Pass literary tale starring Raizo Ichikawa. I've seen all 3 movie versions including Uchima's Souls of the Moonlight trilogy & of course, Okamoto's more widely distributed Sword of Doom & I have to give the slight edge to the version with Ichikawa in the lead role -- although, I am essentially splitting hairs since all 3 are excellent & worthy of viewing at least once but I always go back to the Ichikawa version when I'm in the mood to see this trilogy again.

                            • THE HOODLUM SOLDIER aka YAKUZA SOLDIER - Dir. Yasuzo Masumura (1965)

The original that spawned 7 sequels starring Shintaro Katsu in the lead role. Ripe with Masumura's usual satire & subversive take on the twin evils of militarism & feudalistic hierarchy using the comedic exploits of the "odd couple" of Katsu & Tamura attempting to usurp the authority of the army at every turn. Typical Masumura which means a great film!
