A + A2 - Dir. Tatsuya Mori (1998 + 2001)
Documentary filmmaker, Mori embedded himself into the daily life of the Aum Shinrikyo cult post Tokyo subway sarin gas attack & what follows is a fascinating & at times exhaustive look into the mindset of its adherents. As expected, most of the followers of Aum are sad pathetic individuals & social outcasts who exhibit classic masochistic personality disorders. It's little wonder the tenets of the philosophy of Aum appealed to these poor saps in the first place & that they were so easily manipulated by a charlatan like Shoko Asahara.

Happy Birthday To Me - so-so slasher, takes a while to get going. Not all that birthday related until the last 20 minutes. Needed more cake and candles.
When A Stranger Calls - this holds up well. The guy Carol winds up marrying as an adult reminds me or Artie Ziff from The Simpsons.
Mama - I liked it, despite overzealous CGI wankery.Rock! Shock! Pop!

A TAXING WOMAN - Dir. Juzo Itami (1987)
Still my favorite Itami movie and some of the themes handled in this film are so prescient since Japan's bubble economy collapsed shortly thereafter.
One of my biggest regrets is failing to pick up the Itami boxsets a couple years back. I'm still kicking my ass over that one. Those mini film canisters just look so fucking cool!

Re: What are you watching?
Finished SECRET ARMY, finally. The Dutch set I got includes KESSLER, but it turns out there is such a thing as too many nazis. Later. Devastatingly fine TV.
Did watch the unaired "What did you do in the war daddy?" episode, and while it really is a total catastrophe in tone, theme and concept, it was pretty fascinating, and did nothing to harm the series' magnificent, bitter aftertaste.
Celebrated the end of WWII by watching ROADKILL. A+, even if I didn't get laid afterwards, even though I was at pole position.

Flesh Gordon Meets the Cosmic Cheerleader - I loved it to death. It's so juvenile to the point of brilliance!

Jack Nicholson lesser works double feature:
THE TWO JAKES - as long as you don't continuously compare it to the masterpiece where it originated, this is an above average neo-noir with a pretty solid script and nice cinematography. The "flashbacks" to the previous film are unnecessary and kind of embarrassing. Of the five times in my life that I've watched this movie, this was the most enjoyable viewing, and I owe it entirely to not trying to connect it with CHINATOWN.
BLOOD AND WINE - I liked this Bob Rafelson thriller, it's not perfect, but just enough sleaze. All the characters are flawed, unlikable, backstabbing sons-of-bitches. Michael Caine is super creepy here.
both *** of *****.

SUMMERTIME - Dir. Park Jae Ho (2001)
A remake of Gallaga's 1985 Filipino film, Scorpio Nights about a peeping tom political activist on the lam from government authorities after the Kwangju massacre, who begins a heated sexual affair with the wife of his downstairs neighbor. It was ok but having never seen Scorpio Nights, I don't have a basis on which to judge the remake in context of the original.

The Specialist (1994)
Why am I watching this? Why did I buy the DVD dirt cheap when I know the film is horrible? Is it because I love bloated Stallone films? And Jimmy Woods? And Eric Roberts?
God, this film is so retarded."No presh from the Dresh!"

3 from season 2 of the New Zatoichi TV series:
The Keepsake Dolls (10/04/1976)
Yearning For a Father (10/11/1976)
A Parting Flower (10/18/1976)
The TV series that ran for 4 seasons on Fuji TV is just as good as the movies IMHO. Obviously the sex & violence is toned down a bit & the red stuff doesn't flow as liberally as the later feature films but there is plenty of exciting swordplay and the occasional lopped off appendage to keep things interesting. Most importantly, the writers/directors didn't muck about & kept the original tone of the movies intact, which made the films so memorable in the first place. I plan to catch all 100 episodes because I haven't been disappointed with a single ep yet. Highly recommended!
