Went on a doc binge this weekend:
Super High Me
With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story
Mansome
Kevin Smith: Burn in Hell
Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism
Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles
Cleanflix (by far the best I watched)
Adventures in Plymptoons
There's a Justice League-level of eurobabes in this one, pretty amazing - Mell, Beba Loncar, Margaret Lee, Rosemary Dexter, Michele Mercier...fun film too.
COEDS - I get in the mood for an Italian sex comedy now and then and this one was one of the funnier I've seen. Dagmar Lassander is a new teacher driving the boys crazy. She and Femi Benussi each have topless scenes and there's some genuine (but very goofy) laughs.
Thermae Romae aka テルマエ・ãƒÂマエ Terumae Romae (2012) Dir. Hideki Takeuchi who is probably best know in the West for his Densha Otoko TV mini series
Based on the popular manga by Mari Yamazaki, it's the tale of a down on his luck Roman architect, Lucius who somehow manages to time travel back & forth between ancient Rome & modern day Japan. Yes, it's as wacky as it sounds and if you can get past the fact that Hiroshi Abe is playing the lead role of Lucius and several leading Romans are cast by Japanese actors and that all the dialog spoken in ancient Rome is Japanese then it's actually quite entertaining. The manga is being translated into English and Vol 1 is available is now on Yen Press and I highly recommend it. The major deviation from the manga is that Lucius in the live action movie is transported to modern day Japan whilst in the manga, Lucius time travels to circa 1970s Japan. There is also an anime version available but I have yet to see it.
Stuart Saves His Family: Been meaning to watch this one for years. Pretty good comedy drama. One of the better SNL movies. Would recommend it should you get a chance.
Blastfighter: Re-watch. Damn good action flick taking its cue from First Blood. One of the few truly good Lamberto Bava movies.
The Hills Run Red: Dave (Dead Hate The Living) Parker's 2nd feature. Has a decent premise and good editing and lighting. But it suffers from the usual problems of modern horror films and doesn't do anything different. I liked this movie more when it was called Cigarette Burns.
Flower And Snake - a lot of the humor in this was lost on me the first time I watched this, but this time around, I guess cause I've seen more of the Nikkatsu Roman Porno stuff, I got it. Rad movie.
PLAGUE (1979), Ed Hunt's Canadian riff on THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN. Crichton was a goof to leave the Yonge Street strip on the cutting room floor (though that's the extent of the sleaze in this). Kate Reid plays the exact same character, and the guy from the Nabob commercials waggles his finger and pounds the desk. Also has Celine Lomez, a shitload of Mr. Submarines, a hosers vs soldiers shootout, and Billy Van's brother. Shot by Mark Irwin, so it looks like early Cronenberg, and the score by Eric Robertson's bigger than the whole movie. The R2 dvd's pretty crappy, but awesomely cheap, and I loved it.
The classy made for tv one with Richard Crenna, Billy Zane and Dennis Farina.
While obviously not the jaw-dropping sleazefest of Chuck Parello's later flick (a high water mark in pure tastelessness) this one is a surprisingly effective piece of work almost on par with THE DELIBERATE STRANGER.
Crenna and Zane are excellent but its Farina's turn as serial killer/sexual sadist Angelo Buono that steals the show. He's slimy, greasy and creepy but weirdly charismatic - you can actually see why women would be attracted to this sexual degenerate.
