  • SPOILER WARNING: I quote a line that kinda, sorta, but not really tells you a little bit about how a 50 year old film ended. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!

NEW TALE OF ZATOICHI - Pretty great entry in the series. The plot isn't as focused as in the first two entries, and consequently dragged a bit in the second act, but this one has so much going for it. I felt like Shintaro Katsu really got to show his range as an actor here -- the proposal scene was as compelling as any of the swordfights, and I absolutely loved his final line: "I'm sorry, Miss, but it seems I am that kind of man." -- just heartbreaking. Also having Akira Ikufube back behind the baton was great -- whoever composed for the second film dropped the ball a bit and it just wasn't the same. Finally, and most obviously -- we move to color with this entry. The color really opens up the look of the film, although it does make the lack of blood in the sword fights all the more obvious.

    • THE STORY OF O - I don't know...Corrine Clery is absolutely stunning in this film, no doubt. But Radley Metzger does this sort of thing sooo much better imo. This dragged for me at times. I also found myself feeling a little uncomfortable with it here and there - not for what was happening but the thought behind it. I will say the ending was fitting and welcome. The score was nice but too laid back for my tastes, a dynamic Ciprianiesque s/t was called for.

      • JUAN OF THE DEAD

Surprisingly enjoyable Cuban Zombie flick that mixes humour, satire, politics and zombies...and does it all well

Best zombie film I have seen for a while....even though some effects are a little shaky ...the acting, direction and script are all very good...

...and nice touch having Sid Vicious sing the end credit song!!

        • BURKE & HARE: I'm never not going to like a gothic horror black comedy with plentiful nudity from Francoise Pascal. Still, should have been better. Had some really funny scenes, but never really committed to a consistent comedic tone; had a nice gothic atmosphere, but never ramped up the macabre to really memorable levels. The theme song was ridiculously catchy.

SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR: A poliziotteschi/giallo hybrid, sort of like "What Have They Done To Your Daughters?." Not one of Sergio Martino's better efforts. Has some good chases, some amusing slapstick and a pretty cool soundtrack but Martino mostly seems to be flying on autopilot on this one. On the DVD I watched there's a director's introduction "You're about to watch Suspicious Death of a Minor, which is distributed in Germany by Sazuma Releasing." Way to go for the hard sell, Sergio!

            • Blueprint of Murder - Kihachi Okamoto (1961)

Pretty much your standard industrial espionage actioner with some campy elements thrown into the mix. Nothing special but beautifully shot as typical of Okamoto.

              • Some Guy Who Kills People - this was a fun mix of slasher/horror and character drama with a bit of humor too. A pretty good watch.

I like this but I think the slapstick is sorta out of place. Love the soundtrack! Wish someone would release it.

ESCAPE FROM HELL - Find too many WIP films on the tame side? Here's one that will kick you in the balls and steal your beer. Jungle prison action from veteran spaghetti western director Edoardo Mulargia with one of his regular sw stars Anthony Steffen as the drunken doctor. See Ajita Wilson bite the head off a snake! See sex scenes that skate along the edge of hardcore - and sometimes tumble over it - See a large snake strangle a woman who looks in real danger at times! A half ton of sleaze and more sweaty bodies than you will ever need to see again.

                    • TURKEY SHOOT - Pretty awesome. Kinda wish I'd watched it before "Not Quite Hollywood," or at least waited awhile after watching NQH before I watched it, as the doc had just about all the cool gore gags in it. But still a lot of fun. The next time I go hunting, I'm definitely bringing a wolfman as my weapon of choice.

PLEASURE CAMPUS: SECRET GAMES - Jeez Louise! An absolutely classic Nikkatsu Roman Porno from Tatsumi Kumashiro (Woman With Red Hair, Twisted Path of Love). I was pretty much in shock for the majority of the 64 minute run time. Makes Eros School seem relatively tame by comparison. And by the time you get to the sideshow hypnotist performing in a thunder storm while Tchaikovsky plays on the soundtrack, oddly emotionally affecting too. For any other NRP fans, this one comes HIGHLY recommended.

                        • A Brand New Life - Dir. Ounie Lecomte starring Kim Sae Ron

Based on the director's own childhood of being abandoned by her father in a Korean orphanage to be later adopted by a family in France. This could've easily been another standard bio pic tearjerker but was pleasantly surprised by restraint shown by Lecomte in dealing with some of the obvious underlying emotional issues being addressed here. Kim Sae Ron was perfectly cast in the lead and once again proves her place among the great child actors in world cinema today.

Also notable for being produced by Lee Chang Dong. An artist whose works I admire quite a lot. Oasis, Peppermint Candy & Secret Sunshine are some of my favorite movies not just from Korea but of all-time regardless of national origin.

                          • I was listening to the Stelvio Cipriani soundtrack for "Tentacoli" recently, digging the 70s electronic/harpsichord vibe recently and thinking I needed to get a copy of the film to check it out. Turns out I already have one on the backside of that old "Empire of the Ants" Midnite Movies disc (don't you love finding DVDs in your collection that you forgot you had?). So, a friend came over for BBQ and beers last night and I had to pull "Tentacles" out. My god, that was a slog to get through. It has all the elements for some B movie greatness -- a giant killer octopus, numerous washed up Hollywood stars, a couple of beautiful European babes -- but lacks any tension or excitement whatsoever. Still, it has it's moments and we had lots of laughs. Highlight was possibly Bo Hopkins' lovely soliloquy to his pet killer whales...

Will Gleason: [to two killer whales held at sea in a portable tank] I guess you know now why I brought you here... I wanted to tell ya more about it, but there've been many people that died... I've lost a loved one. I need your help more now than ever. I remember the times when I was training ya - people used to call you killers. They used ta call me that on the streets. It doesn't mean nothing. You have more, more love in your heart, more affection than any human being I ever met. But now I... I can't ask anybody else, so I'm asking you to help me kill this octopus. I hope you understand that. I know I'm in your environment. I don't want it this way, but if I release ya and you go away, I want ya to know I'll understand. All right, enough said. I gotta go now. If you feel anything - you talk to me. Make some noises. I know people'll think we're crazy. Maybe we are... Maybe we are...

It's funny... my son was pretty freaked out by the grim ending of HIII. F13 didn't phase him at all though.
