  • Arrow Video Releasing Inglorious Basterds

Coming from Arrow Video on 1/14/25.

ONCE UPON A TIME... IN NAZI OCCUPIED FRANCE

One of the most celebrated filmmakers of our time harnesses the power of cinema itself to rewrite history in this electrifying WWII thriller.

Narrowly escaping the massacre of her entire family by the SS, Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) flees to Paris and forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Meanwhile, a guerilla band of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), are waging a bloody war of attrition behind enemy lines but Europe remains beneath Nazi bootheels. Believing themselves unstoppable, the leaders of the Third Reich assemble in Paris for the premiere of propaganda epic Nation's Pride. The location? Shosanna's cinema. With all the rotten eggs in one basket, "The Basterds" join forces with British Commando Lt. Archie Hicox (Michael Fassbender) and German film star/undercover allied agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) to infiltrate the premiere. Their plan? Blow up the basket...

Brim-filled with shocking violence, thrilling action and excruciating suspense, Inglourious Basterds was a box office smash around the world garnering eight Academy Award™ (2009) nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay, with Christoph Waltz winning Best Supporting Actor for his star-making turn as the chilling SS Col. Hans Landa. Witness the war as it might have been in stunning 4K Ultra HD, packed with explosive extras!

      Tarantino's best film.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

              1. Inglourious Basterds
              2. Jackie Brown
              3. Once Upon a Time...
              4. Kill Bill 2
              5. Reservoir Dogs

....and the rest, although I think PULP FICTION has aged poorly and DJANGO is his weakest, but I like them both. DEATH PROOF is underrated, in regards to the GRINDHOUSE cut. The extended cut is boring.

I hated those women, especially the first group. Top marks for the stunts, but Zoe Bell is not an actor (at least she wasn't then, haven't seen her subsequent films).

He certainly knows his way around a plate of nachos. I though Rose McGowan was good in this for a small role. She was great in Scream too, but normally not my cup of tea.

Saw on Twitter that Arrow confirmed that this is a new director approved transfer. They certainly made True Romance look good after years of shit releases, so my interest is piqued...

I doubt it. This had a 2K DI, so it would have to be redone from scratch and a cost that probably would not make it profitable for Arrow. Plus, if it did, Arrow would have touted it in the announcement.

                            Jackie Brown
                            Reservoir Dogs
                            Pulp Fiction

                            Then the rest....

I was such a huge fan during those first three movies, especially if you lump True Romance in there, such a great era. I followed every news bit about Kill Bill and when I saw it it was like watching The Phantom Menace. I couldn't accept at first that it didn't hit for me. But I knew that when I saw Part 2 it felt more like homework than something that I was excited about it was over for me. I didn't see another Tarantino film until Django and The Hateful 8 because they were westerns, except they're not westerns. He doesn't make genre films he makes Tarantino films. They were ok. I enjoyed them but not like those first three films.

Once Upon a Time was enjoyable but the cartoony ending hurts it for me. It's probably number 4 on my list if you twist my arm. But I have no desire to see it again. Unlike those first three that I watched dozens of times. I eventually went back and watched Death Proof and Inglourious Basterds. There were parts of Basterds that I really enjoyed. The Euro cast is fantastic. I couldn't stand the Brad Pitt and Eli Roth bits. I want to like it more than I do, parts of it feel like classic Tarantino. Death Proof was rough. I couldn't stand any of it. The dialogue was overly mannered (it felt like a Tarantino parody) and the acting was awful. The stunts were good but not enough for me to save the rest of the movie for me. But it does feel like the closest thing he made to a genuine grindhouse flick. Lack of nudity really hurts his films. Is Django the only film with nudity?

I still think he's a good filmmaker. I enjoy listening to him talk about film, his love for it is infectious.

My reaction to Inglorious was split upon first viewing but while those flaws have gone away to me I feel like I appreciate the humour and balls of the climax a lot more now. The resolution and some other tonal lapses suggest Tarantino is a bit of a moral midget at times.

                              My ranking of his films:

                              Jackie Brown
                              Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood
                              Resevoir Dogs
                              Pulp Fiction
                              Kill Bill 1
                              Hateful Eight
Inglorious Basterds (hate that too cute title)
                              Death Proof
                              Django Unchained
                              Kill Bill 2
