  • David Cronenberg's The Shrouds

"We’re now just a week away from the Cannes Film Festival premiere of the highly anticipated next feature from David Cronenberg. The Shrouds, led by Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, and Sandrine Holt, has now debuted its first footage with a 30-second teaser ahead of the premiere.

Here’s the synopsis: “Karsh, 50, is a prominent businessman. Inconsolable since the death of his wife, he invents GraveTech, revolutionary and controversial technology that enables the living to monitor their dear departed in their shrouds. One night, multiple graves, including that of Karsh’s wife, are desecrated. Karsh sets out to track down the perpetrators.”"

Had no idea this even existed. I'm so glad Cronenberg got another feature done. Cassel is awesome and he was my favourite part of the otherwise mediocre A DANGEROUS METHOD.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

That trailer doesn't give much away, but the synopsis sounds reminiscent of the 'grave cam' imagery in Pupi Avati's 'Zeder'.

Looks really promising, and seems to be yet another Cronenberg film centred around a surrealist tech/medical business concept too creepy and insane for anyone to tolerate in reality, but which feels eerily plausible within the world be creates on-screen...

Given the fairly recent death of his wife, this could be a highly personal film in the same way that The Brood was.
I'm bitter, I'm twisted, James Joyce is fucking my sister.

Cassel certainly looks a lot like Cronenberg in this, especially the haircut.

As soon as I saw the synopsis I thought this would be some sort of closure for him. Hopefully not his career, of course.

I'm always willing to give Cronenberg a chance, and I love Vincent Cassel.

Reviews are a bit on the 'meh' side of good. Two hours seems a bit long for a Cronenberg film that supposedly lacks his usual humour.
