Dear Criterion, packaging something in cardboard does not make it special: 50% of the time it just makes it damaged.

      Tell me about it.
There's items I haven't even attempted to buy, because I just know what the result will be. The last of their digipack titles I ordered was The Irishman. It took me a long time to order it, because I was dreading receiving it "destroyed", but then there was a sale, and I ordered it. I think you can guess the results.

I really don't get it. These companies know that most purchases come from online retailers, and know the packaging they use is terrible with digipacks. Since the DVD (and CD) days, it's a constant source of problems, and surely of returns.
Why not place it on an actual solid case, or if indeed you want to do a fragile digipack, sell it already inside a solid card box (like some boxsets already do), so that these can be safely shipped without much risk of damage.

I'll never understand these companies. They're either completely oblivious or don't give a shit. It must be hitting them in the wallet when it comes to returns. What's wrong with nice, simple cases with decent hubs? Even if you treat it like the crown jewels, all carboard packaging is going to look tatty eventually (that's if it survives the initial delivery). Discs that slide in and out are going to get scuffed. Don't even get me started on mediabooks, what happens if you receive one and the teeth are smashed (answer, I bought some sticky hubs so I remove the rest of the teeth and put one in. Shouldn't have to)? I'm sure there's some frustrated creative that wants to win an award for the 'best' packaging who gives zero fucks about the people who have to live with their dumb decisions.

Plus, in the UK at least, Criterion titles with 'special' packaging never go on sale. Maybe they'd sell more copies if they didn't charge a premium for releases with substandard cardboard packaging.
