As previous posters have said, he was so much more then Shaft.

He lifted so many genre films of the 80s with his presence!

Always a pleasure to see him show up in anything I was watching. I was a latecomer to the SHAFT thing, but he really was a hell of a lead.

He did seem to be a bit more versatile than many within the genre. I got my own personal favorites but SHAT'S BIG SCORE is an incredibly classy production and IMO, the highwater mark of genre. It fits well alongside THE FRENCH CONNECTION and THE SEVEN-UPS and other '70s cop thrillers. Lot's of great tv too up until fairly recent. RIP.

    R..I.P.
I was fortunate to have worked with Richard on a short-lived TV serie (413 HOPE ST.) back in the 90s. He was just so cool to be around. Wasn't a big talker, but his presence commanded the set. One day, the Sound man decided to prank him and play the 'Shaft' theme when he arrived for the day's work. Now, I'm certain that this wasn't the first time a crew had done this with him, but Richard played along with it, smiled, and made his entrance like a Hero.
Good memories. Peace be with you, Richard.

    R.I.P. Richard Roundtree

He has passed away at 81.

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/mo...ft-1235626813/

"Richard Roundtree, the ultracool actor who helped open the door to a generation of Black filmmakers and performers with his portrayal of private eye John Shaft, “the cat that won’t cop out when there’s danger all about,” died Tuesday. He was 81.

Roundtree died at his home in Los Angeles of pancreatic cancer, his manager, Patrick McMinn, told The Hollywood Reporter.

He was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and had a double mastectomy. “Breast cancer is not gender specific,” he said four years later. “And men have this cavalier attitude about health issues. I got such positive feedback because I spoke out about it, and it’s been quite a number of years now. I’m a survivor.”"
