    Ah - the English.

Nothing is quite as entertaining as a properly outraged left-leaning Brit confronted with a homegrown piece of reactionary entertainment like WHO DARES WINS, THE WILD GEESE or HARRY BROWN. The thread title comes from one hilariously unglued reviewer over on Amazon UK discussing WHO DARES WINS and it's preposterous plot centering around crazed no-nukes terrorists being hunted by Lewis Collin's cut rate James Bond. THE WILD GEESE of course is amazing for being quite racist but in such a muddle-headed "Rule Britannia" way that its impossible to get actually worked up about it. It also has a cast full of some of both the greatest actors and drunks in cinema history. And any movie that has Richard Burton, Richard Harris AND Roger Moore in it where no one died from alcohol poisoning on the set has achieved something incredible right off the bat.

The Americans have RAMBO, the MISSING IN ACTION TRILOGY and DIRTY HARRY. The Italians have STREET LAW and the Maurizio Merli canon. So lets have some more distinctly British, un-pc and thoroughly conservative films. I'm looking for some favorites of members out there.

Call it the Margret Thatcher approved film list.

Does it surprise anyone that I own all the limey films mentioned above on DVD?

The only one I have is The Wild Geese but it's a great movie and I'd be down with watching more in the same vein.

I'm having a hard time coming up with titles that fit the bill here. I loved HARRY BROWN and THE WILD GEESE but I'm hard pressed to think of others. I almost mentioned SITTING TARGET but it's not a reactionary film at all.

I just picked up a used copy of OUTLAW. It looks like it might fit, judging by some IMDB reviews:

It isn't just that it's morally skewed - though it is, horribly (while the heroes start out merely beating criminals, they soon end up hanging them and then shooting at the police, and we're still expected to regard them as heroes), but the overall execution is appalling.
Simply, as explained in a prolonged rant that resembles a 'Daily Mail' editorial penned by Death Wish's Paul Kersey, they want to get rid of "the paedophiles, the scum, the dealers, the prostitutes."
Incredibly poorly-made quasi-fascist garbage, this is one of the worst British films to be released for a very long time. Ostensibly posing questions about the state of law and order in the UK, the only real question asked by this movie is what on earth is Sean Bean doing appearing in it and who did the producers (all 38 of 'em!) have to blow to cast him?
Coming back from a war (it's not specified which one) and finding his wife has shacked up with someone else, Sean Bean is disillusioned with everything and, together with a group of similarly disheartened men, forms a vigilante group to beat up and kill paedophiles, drug dealers and other criminals who have either been acquitted or not charged. Bean is clearly playing a Travis Bickle role, with the rest of the gang in some sort of 'Fight Club'. Whereas no attempt was made to create a hero of Travis Bickle in 'Taxi Driver', Love obviously feels that vigilante groups are a great idea and that the solution to Britain's problems is through lynchings and IRA-style punishment beatings.

OUTLAW would fit the bill. Even better is the crazy commentary on the UK DVD, with Nick Love and Danny Fackin' Dyer doing their best Derek and Clive impersonations:

Nick Love's new THE SWEENEY film, with Ray Winstone and Ben ('Plan B, innit') Drew. I watched it at the cinema a couple of weeks ago; it's trash of the highest order. Has this been released outside the UK yet?

Here's another recent one that I've just remembered, although I thought it was a cut above the likes of OUTLAW (except for, IIRC, a ridiculous attempt to overcomplicate the plot towards the end of the film):

A year or two ago, there was also a shocking adaptation of Ken Bruen's BLITZ with the Stath and Paddy Considine:

I own all of those on DVD to, cept the sweeney cause it aint out yet. I guess I must confess to actually liking these english perverts. A lot. And yes, The Sweeney will be bought on DVD as soon as it becomes available.

I Felt both Outlaw and The Veteran were a notch below the classics mentioned in the first post. Blitz was better, but still felt like one of Jason Stathams most un-statham movies.

I'm fond of Peter Yates' ROBBERY (1967) a classic British crime film, it's all business, and feels very current to me.

Does anyone remember NORTH SEA HIJACK aka FFOLKES ?

An atypical role for Roger Moore, who gives a memorable performance.

That Outlaw commentary track is magnificent! Listened to it 3 or 4 times already and will return to it shortly. "1976 Taxi Driver came out. Got cunted." Got cunted to the tune of a half dozen Oscar noms as I recall but good point chaps.

Jesus! That OUTLAW commentary is a thing of utter beauty. Just picked up both OUTLAW and THE VETERAN on Blu from Amazon UK for dirt cheap prices based on this awesome thread. As for BLITZ - I picked that one up after catching it on Netflix. I love the film. I really enjoy Statham's interactions with Considine's gay cop. Statham's "Did you interfere with me?" line is hysterical. BLITZ is also extremely "English" with Gillen almost channeling Johnny Rotten as the scumbag villain.

Fuck yeas! A classic! Roger Moore as a women hating gay man whom lives with about a dozen cats. Hilarious shit. To bad the mission in itself is not as spectactular as the Moore role. But yeah. A damn good film anyhow.
