Colour me shocked by this one. Who would have thought that the gents who bought us Speed Racer were once capable of a film like this? Absolutely top class 'erotic thriller' (as a side note what happened to the erotic thriller? Such a top genre. Surely Jade and Sliver weren't bad enough to kill it off entirely?). I've obviously heard of the film in passing a few times over the years but just assumed it was a soft porn, lesbian flick with not much else to it. How wrong can one man be? Which is not to say that there isn't still some quality soft core lesbian love making, because there is, and it's pretty nicely handled.

Really well put together piece. The art design of the film is brilliaat. The use of colour in particular is the most considered you'll see this side of an Almodovar flick. Lots of little showy, but classy camera tricks that just make it look like the directors were having a hell of a lot of fun.

The stories okay too. The wife of a mob boss takes on a hot, if tomboyish lesbian lover, and together they scheme to rob him of a couple million bucks. Bloodshed and twists and turns ensue. It always feels more complex at the time than it actually is and it's maybe a twist short when it gets to the end- and I'm not sure they ever explained what happened to all those bodies...- but it's more than good enough. Best film I've seen in a while.

One of the best 'modern noir' films made, I think. The whole cast are fantastic here, Pantoliano especially but Tilly and Gershon too. Yowza. It's sexy without being stupid, it has loads of style and an equal amount of substance and it also manages to be tense and exciting and beautiful to look at.

It's well shot but some of the dialog is definitely 'so bad it's good' and I'm surprised by the lack of Lesbian scenes but it's a fun mob story showing just how good Joe Pantoliano really is.

          Release Date: 14 July 2014
Format: Dual Format Blu-ray + DVD
Starring: Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon, Joe Pantoliano
          Directed by: The Wachowskis

Synopsis: VIOLET AND CORKY ARE MAKING LAUNDRY DAY A VERY BIG DEAL.

Before making their name with worldwide smash hit The Matrix and its two sequels (which they similarly wrote and directed), sibling duo The Wachowskis debuted with this sizzling neo-noir thriller financed by legendary Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis.

Gina Gershon (Showgirls, Face/Off) plays Corky, a young woman recently released from a five-year jail term for, as she puts it, the “redistribution of wealth”. After a brief lift encounter with her sexy and sultry neighbour Violet (Jennifer Tilly) the pair strike up a steamy love affair under the nose of Violet's unhinged Mafia boyfriend Caesar (Joe Pantoliano). Soon the two women are hatching a plot to steal $2 million from Caesar and his associates - but if you're going to mess with the mob, you'd better be sure you do it right…

Hugely well received upon its release, reviews for Bound saw some critics comparing the Wachowskis with the Coen Brothers - and Blood Simple in particular - whilst Roger Ebert heaped praise on the film, declaring it to be “one of those movies that works you up, wrings you out and leaves you gasping”. By turns shocking and funny (and with plenty of lesbian sex scenes thrown in for good measure) Bound is an astoundingly assured debut which oozes style and sensuality.

I miss these, as well as the neo-noir/'noir lite' films of the same era (of course, the films usually straddled both of those subgenres).

I liked BOUND. I remember being drawn in to see it by 'that' scene, which let's face it was a big part of the film's publicity at the time, but finding it quite an impressive little film. The taste of it was soured somewhat by the Wachowski's subsequent films; I'd have liked to have seen them tackle some more similar material.

I can imagine the film looks pretty good in HD. Think I might have to buy the Arrow Blu when it hits the streets.

                  From Arrow's FB page:

                  "***Release Date Change BOUND***

We are sorry to announce that we have now had to push the release date of Bound back until the 4th of August.

Our compressionist was not quite happy with the encode and so we took the decision to do it again to get most superior encode possible. Unfortunately this has taken longer than originally anticipated and has had a knock on effect on the release date.
We can only apologise for the slight delay and hope that you will be as pleased as we are with the release when you see the final package."

It's this level of transparency and their willingness to delay things to make sure the encode is right that's making me trust Arrow again. Good on them for letting people know!

I am all for waiting for a better product, because in the end that's what will remain once the wait is over.

I'm watching the Arrow Blu right now (just taking time out to make a cup of strong coffee). I'd forgotten how good this film is. It's got a super-sleazy atmosphere. I don't think I've watched the film in full since it came out at the cinema (I've got the DVD somewhere but, being mightily annoyed by everything the Wachowskis made after THE MATRIX, which soured my feelings towards BOUND somewhat, don't recall that I ever got round to watching it).

God, I miss those 1990s neo-noir pictures, with their quasi-retro production design. There's nothing like them being made today. It's great to see two mature women given such roles too; I guess if such a film were attempted today, rather than being in their mid/late-thirties, the parts would be given to a couple of twenty-somethings.

FYI, Arrow's BOUND Blu-ray looks pretty much identical to the French disc. It's cropped slightly and darker than the US Blu-ray (but then again, aside from the cropping, I prefer the look of the French/Arrow Blus of this title).
