  • Passion... New Film From Brian De Palma

So De Palma is working with Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams on this one.

    Trailer!

    From Collider:

"The first trailer for Brian De Palma's erotic thriller Passion has gone online. The film is a remake of Alain Corneau's Love Crime, and centers on the relationship between a woman (Rachel McAdams) and her innocent, lovely and easily exploited protégé (Noomi Rapace). The film looks like what you'd expect from De Palma in this genre. There's creepy psychosexual imagery and serious tension between the female leads. The film will be running the festival circuit through Venice, Toronto, and New York, and it's one of my must-see movies at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. This trailer only makes me more excited to see this flick, and also play catch-up on De Palma's filmography, in particular Femme Fatale and Dressed to Kill."

De Palma has kind of been all over the place lately but he's been fairly consistently good when it comes to sexy thrillers. Don't know if he'll match his past glories here or not but Rapace is an interesting talent and a cool casting choice. The trailer's pretty short but it definitely does have some bizarre imagery and looks plenty steamy.

I'd be willing to give this one a shot.

Indiewire's review here. They note that has 'flashes of classic De Palma but often feels lackluster.'

I dunno - the trailer intrigued me enough that I still want to see it even if his recent stuff hasn't done much for me.

I can't imagine not giving De Palma a chance. Everything he does is visually arresting. Looking forward to this one.

I liked the original somewhat. This will be tough. I mean, De Palma is not half bad, and McAdams is kind of cute, but I fucking hate Noomi Rapace as she is a coked up white trash piece of human garbage whom has gotten lots of praise for a shitty performance in a shitty adaptation of a pretty good novel. So I will probably skip this in the end.

Wish he wasn't reduced to doing a remake but I'll usually check out anything by De Palma eventually.

After REDACTED I've changed my tune on this stance. Very hesitant with him now, even though he did some of my fave movies of the 70s and 80s.

I forgot about REDACTED. I didn't see it. I'll have to catch up with it soon. Everybody is entitled to trip over the red carpet at least once, Robin.

There's a more positive review of it here.

I love scanbox. Best scandinavian movie distributor. From Margeritis Alien from the Deep and Cannon Group films via almost all Albert Pyun films like Nemesis and Mean Guns in the VHS era to the NuImage films with plenty Van Damme and Seagal and everything from Luc Bessons company to all the Jackie Chan HK-actioners in the DVD era. They seemed to be in serious decline for some years now, but it would appear they have found new financing and are coming back in good old form with this and a bunch of other interesting independent/non-hollywood and french films.

I saw "Passion" and enjoyed it. It's not De Palma's best film, but it's not his worst either. The eroticism did not quite work for me as well as it did in "Dressed to Kill" or "Femme Fatale". I thought Rachel McAdams' performance was damn good, but Noomi Rapace's mediocre performance kind of left me cold. As expected, the movie has style to burn and the cinematography was truly beautiful( I'm glad De Palma shot on film instead of digital). "Love Crime", in my opinion, is the superior movie. For some reason, even though De Palma directed "Passion", it felt like a Paul Verhoeven film.

Just as I expected! Noomi sucks major balls. Worthless actress! But a Verhoeven feel is just what I want from a movie like this!

I'll go see PASSION even though I'm on a spending diet until after the World 3-D Expo is September.

Have LOVE CRIME, the original French version, sitting here. If I watch it first, will it ruin PASSION for me?

Ok, Ryan Clark is really stoked with how good this is, and I really trust his opinion when it comes to De Palma, so now I'm hyped too. ^_^
