You know what this movies missing? James Woods. He could easily have played any of the male roles in this. Instead somehow we have all American boy Kyle MacLachlan looking as out of place as it's possible for an actor to look. It's like casting Bambi in a remake of Meet The Feebles.
I haven't seen this film since I was about 15 and when I was 15 I thought it was great. Not sure I ever saw it all the way through but it was still clearly quality cinema. Rewatching it with slightly wiser eyes now was not quite the same experience. What a fucking misfire. It must have seemed like a good idea at the time. "It's '42nd street' but with tits". 42nd Street was good. Tits are good. How can you go wrong?
Well casting Berkley for a start. She hasn't come on much as an actress since her Saved By The Bell days. More importantly she somehow manages to be a naked Hollywood leading lady, with a permanent "come on" attitude and still manage to be completely unsexy. She's all angles. No tits, no arse.
The real culprit here though is the Eszterhas script. Everybody here is so intensely unlikeable but not not in a fun way. More in a "I used to avoid dicks like you in high school sort of way". Somehow despite the surrounds and their back grounds they all come with middle class, middle brow values. Nomi walks in a guy she's maybe, sort of seeing with another girl and gets cut up about it. The showgirls I know would have to be married and have had a sit down talk about exclusivity before that would be a problem. It just doesn't feel real for a moment.
Veerhoven is not in fine form either. He was apparently fucking Berkley and any number of Showgirls and no doubt in the process he took his eye off the ball. So to speak. That pool sex scene with MacLachlan... what the fuck was he thinking? My girlfriend was in hysterics. "Ha, ha one of your favourite directors directed that! (fit of giggles) You listed him as an inspiration!"" Well yes. We all have bad days.
Didn't make it to the end. Must have dozed off. The last thing I remember is the black girl was about to be raped. Odd to fall asleep to a rape scene but it's a good indication of how soporific this film is. This has become known as a so bad it's good classic but I just couldn't get any fun out of it at all.
