  • What genre would you like to see make a comeback?

The history of movie-making is littered with various genres, subgenres, and even just fads. Things that got popular for a decade, a few months, or even just a few movies. Which ones would you like to see make a comeback, in place of all the totally unoriginal garbage (remakes, reboots, etc) coming out of Hollywood, or any other country's film industry?

I'd like to see the road movie come back, full throttle. Not just action movies with car stunts, aka FAST AND THE FURIOUS or DRIVE or whatever, but films where the story takes place on a long drive. Like they say, it's not the destination, but the trip that is the fun.

Also: I'd like to see what a modern mondo would be like. Not just a documentary, but something in the exploitation vein thereof. Something crass, violent, and designed to shock.

Roughies! Will never happen though. New Mondo Movies would be interesting.

For some reason sword and sandel popped into my head even though I'm not a huge fan but I guess they sort of morphed into nonsense like 300 and Clash of the Titans.

    What about biker movies?

      New Mondo Movies...DEFINITELY

Of course I would love the DECENTLY BUDGETED Roman Porno/Pink Film to resurface...although I guess this genre hasnt really disappeared...just the quality....

Practical effects gore movies that were FUN...not this torture porn crap.....

      Blaxxploitation ..the very UN-pc type...

Actually, the genre I would like is the NON-politically-Correct movie...with as many stereotypes as possible...

PORN MOVIES that are fun to watch s movies..not just porn for porn sake......with kung fu bits if possible!

I don't think a lot of these genres you're suggesting would work with the fashions and backdrop of current day. What would be better is if some huge underground vault filled with thousands of unknown movies from these genres back in the 60s and 70s was found today.

To be honest the INTERNET has destroyed any chance the MONDO MOVIE could return.....Whats the point...You can "google" things FAR worse than you would ever see in a mondo movie!

JAPAN is the only place I can realistically see any strange, obscure genre being able to continue to be made......Anything Goes over there....

Zombie movies... Oh wait, fuck that. No. Just no.

Not specifically a genre but I'd like to see the return of old school Italo horror. Give Michele Soavi a budget and let him make another masterpiece. Get Sergio Martino another gialli script. Get Claudio Fragasso to shoot another atrocity, but write the script in Eyetalian, badly translate it to English, then hire unknowns to recite the script exactly as written. If he's up to it, fund Umberto Lenzi's next picture. Someone start making a clone of Fulci and Bava. Get Daria Nicolodi to have sex with Argento again so we can get some good Argento films.

Agree to everything Alex said!! And does Bruno Mattei have a son or daughter? Get them to continue their dad's ripoff films!!

And start using FILM again, i.e. celluloid!! No more shot on video!

R-rated action. I mean, it is only 20 years ago that Die Hard and Lethal Weapon was the norm. What do we get now? Child friendly CGI wankfests.

In all fairness that's not, uh, fair!!

Yes, we do get the PG CGI shit but if you look a little beyond the Hollywood mainstream kids stuff we ALSO get SAW, HOSTEL, awesome mega violent French and Spanish splatter movies, etc. etc.

20 years ago that gory stuff would have been hidden away in the back of the video rental stores, now it's everywhere.

RAMBO 4 and THE EXPENDABLES are way more violent than any action film from 20 yrs back.

And horror movies in the 90s was a joke!

I love chase movies, and would enjoy if a string of cheaply made, dangerous car chase movies with crazy stunts, redneck hijinks, and incompetent law enforcement officials. I'd also love to see someone really get down a good homage to Russ Meyer movies. And I would love it if someone would make an action star out of a primordial dwarf.

But I totally agree with what Alison said. It would be awesome to have an all-new batch of unknown 70s stuff to surface. But...SWV seems to get some cool stuff I've not heard of and am excited to see.

Post Apocalyptic films, I have always loved this genre. But it seems none have been made in close to 20 years.
