                      • Coming from Kino 4/25/23.

                        HEAT (1986)

Ex-mercenary Nick Escalante isn’t a violent man by nature. He’s just good at it. And when things get very, very bad, he’s naturally at his best. Las Vegas is the backdrop for all the torrid action of Heat, as screen legend Burt Reynolds (Hustle, Stick) plays the softhearted bodyguard who’s out to protect his friends. When a gangster’s son brutally beats an old flame, it ignites a tightly wound thriller that pits Burt against the mob and culminates in a vicious cat-and-mouse climax. Written by Hollywood’s master craftsman, William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, Misery), directed by Dick Richards (Farewell, My Lovely) and co-starring Karen Young (Criminal Law), Peter MacNicol (Ghostbusters II), Neill Barry (O.C. and Stiggs), Howard Hesseman (Honky Tonk Freeway) and Diana Scarwid (Inside Moves).

                          Color 120 Minutes 1.85:1 Rated R

Jaded, cynical, edgy. The iconic Burt Reynolds (Shamus, Heat) is Lt. Phil Gaines, a case-hardened Los Angeles detective who finds himself drawn into a dark, complex puzzle that involves the death of a teenaged girl. Complicating his investigation is his sizzling relationship with an icy hooker, played by cinema goddess Catherine Deneuve (Belle de Jour, Mississippi Mermaid), who has a dangerous connection to the case—one of her high-powered clients is a main suspect. Moreover, the victim’s unstable father blurs the focus of Gaines’ investigation even further by embarking on his own erratic, inept sleuthing. Ben Johnson, Paul Winfield, Eileen Brennan, Eddie Albert, Ernest Borgnine and Jack Carter also star in a suspenseful, gritty tale of urban corruption and murder directed by the legendary Robert Aldrich (The Dirty Dozen, The Longest Yard).

Screen legend Burt Reynolds (White Lightning, Stick) has never been cooler or sexier than when he’s paired with Dyan Cannon (The Anderson Tapes) in this lusty, bawdy adventure. Reynolds is McCoy, a private detective with a penchant for pocket billiards, loot and women. A baffling murder by a flame-throwing killer is linked to a million-dollar diamond theft. The eccentric owner of the heisted gems commissions McCoy to find the killer—and the stolen goods. McCoy, however, discovers that his bizarre client is after more than just diamonds when he uncovers a fantastic scheme to sell surplus military weapons on the international black market. Pursued by thugs and beaten up, McCoy takes comfort in an affair with Alexis (Cannon). When McCoy’s poolhall sidekick is found murdered, he decides to take matters into his own hands in true private-eye style. Buzz Kulik (Warning Shot, The Hunter) directs this action-packed comedy-thriller, with music by Jerry Goldsmith (Breakout) and supporting turns by John P. Ryan (Runaway Train), Joe Santos (The Don Is Dead), Larry Block (Hardcore), Kevin Conway (F.I.S.T.) and John Glover (52 Pick-Up).

Anyone seen this? I'm a big fan of the book this was based on, which was also adapted for Statham's Wild Card which was a disappointing movie. Love to see a better take on it. If nothing else the backstory of this movie must be great. In Goldman's memoirs it's the only film he doesn't talk about because 'as far as I know the lawsuits are still flying.'

                              • Turned out Heat was on YouTube. Not bad. Enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than Wild Card.

Just been reading about the movie online... Oddly it seems Altman was originally attached to direct. He must have signed on based on Goldmans name and thinking he was getting a Butch Cassidy or an All The Presidnets Men. This, however, is adapted from Goldmans trash period when he wrote thrillers full of killer robots, time travel and large men beating the shit out of one another. Heat is about a massive Mexican who is the most deadly man in the world from 2 to 20 feet and who's balls get hot when violence is in the air (thus the title Heat). Altman ran for the hills. The project would go through FIVE more directors before wrapping. Much blood-letting behind the scenes.

Its a suprisingly faithful adptation. Most of the dialogue is straight from the book. The big change is that the book has two separate threads, one a detective story and one a gangland story, while the films skips the detective nonsense to focus on the gangsters. Probably a good move though it does mean that some major characters in this movie have not much to do because they were part of the detective story that got cut. They're still in the movie anyway.

Reynolds is obvously not a 6 foot 4 Mexican and doesnt have enough charm to be Escalante. Reynolds, 'not enough charm'?! I know. For some reason he's a bit blank here though.

The one drawback here is the actions not very good. It's the books raison d'etre but the director is not up to it. The last shoot out is alright I guess. It's not in the book. The book ends with Escalante jumping into battle and finishes with the immortal closer: "his balls were on fire!" and left us to imagine the conflict rather than detail it. Here we get the blood-letting which was probably needed as its only the second action scene in this supposed action movie.

All the above sounds like I'm unhappy but actually I enjoyed the hell out of it. You could do a lot worse on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
