A deep and hearty R.I.P. to WILLIAM SMITH. A strong distinctive actor who I had the honor of working with on two films back in the day. He was as imposing in person as he was on the screen, but, always a pro.
The first time I worked with him was on the cult film, HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN. There, he took a young 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper under his wing and helped show him the ropes. Later, I did some reshoots on Gary Graver's MOON IN SCORPIO. Smith had gotten a haircut after the original shoot and we had to hurridly rush to get him a wig! Graver, by the way, was Orson Welles' cinematographer for years including the recently restored OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND.
Years later, Bill was the guest speaker at a 35mm screening of Johy Hayes' 1972 horror film GRAVE OF THE VAMPIRE (screenplay by The Sopranos' David Chase). I spoke to him after the film, and he graciously greeted me and we chatted for a few minutes.
Will miss you, Bill Smith
