  • The Tomorrow War (2021)

I have a new least favourite cliche in movies. It's the villian who is absolutely instantly lethal to all his foes until he meets the hero. You know the setup, you've got a villian who kills everyone in the room with his silenced pistol before they even know he's there but when he meets our hero, for some reason, the pistol is not in play and all of a sudden he's throwing our hero across the room into concrete walls instead. No doubt it smarts but our boys back on his feet in seconds. There's a lot of that in this film. There's a hell of a lot of that in Hollywood films at the moment generally.

So this was supposed to be a blockbuster. Instead due to Covid it got sold to Amazon for a cool $200,000,000 or about 1/45 of what Amazon just paid for MGM.

The setup: thirty years in future humanity has been all but wiped out. Rather than solving their own problems the bastards come knocking on our door by the magic of time travel and conscript humans from 2022 s to come fight for them in the future. Does that make any sense? Already I'm guessing you're going 'well why wouldn't they just-' Exactly. If they have time travel in this scenario there's a million better way to tackle this problem than with that solution. The second you start to think about it it just falls apart.

That's what's interesting about this movie. More than any other blockbuster ever made it is completely nonsensical in its storytelling choices. Central setup, doesn't make sense. How that setup is implemented, doesnt make sense. Every individual choice made by a character in this movie, doesn't make sense. How they wind up solving the problem, really, really, will have you screaming at the telly, doesn't make sense. I'm itching to write a list of everything that doesn't make sense here but it'd be a long list and it'd be extremely Spoiler heavy.

It's bizarre. I mean a lot of people must have read this script before a camera got switched on.

I think you should watch it. It's kind of entertaining. Chris Pratts charming right? He is at least the best Chris Hollywood's got right now and lord knows they have a lot Chris's. The real reason to watch though is to just to marvel at how completely nonsensical this film is and wonder at what that says about about 2021, film, Hollywood and- fuck I think this film has damn near given me an existential crisis.

I managed to sit through this in 3 installments while doing other things simultaneously. Absolute garbage. Makes your average Fadt and Furious sequel seem logical and sensible.

I had to google that. Oddly at the time I completely didn't clock that it was 2 hours 20 minutes. And I was complaining loudly just the day before watching this about the length of Ford Vs Ferrari- which I enjoyed a lot but damn it was long.

The basic premise doesn't work and nothing makes sense. Stupid.
