  • Looking for films with heavy visualy designed aesthetic.

I'm looking to show films to students of visual design, something with a heavy emphasis on set design to crazy aesthetics in montage and graphics.
    So far I have:
    The Holy Mountain (1973)
    Last Year at Marienbad
    Viva la Muerte (1971)
    Mr. Freedom (1969)
    La Chinoise (1967)

Any more examples of such films I can activate young minds to the potential of visuals in narrative films?

      Manhunter.

And if you consider actual buildings as sets: The Belly of an Architect.

        Beyond the Black Rainbow/Mandy

I'd say Alien 3 is up there. Also both Bladerunners.

Thanks guys all those are definitely worthwhile and exactly what I was looking for, I have seen all of them, it's just hard to think of them sometimes which is why I needed a kick in the brain to remember them.

Pillow Book is also a good one with the text overlays, which is one aspect I want to explore.

Anything by Peter Greenaway or Derek Jarman.

                    JUBILEE, CARAVAGGIO, SEBASTIANE?

METROPOLIS would be an obvious choice.

I'd add ROBOCOP and TOTAL RECALL too.

                    DELICATESSEN.

                    Gary Nelson's THE BLACK HOLE.

                    BABA YAGA

                    2001

                    Dreyer's VAMPYR

Paul Schrader's MISHIMA - partic the passages adapted from Mishima's works

                    DOGVILLE, EUROPA from Von Trier

                    Soderbergh's KAFKA

                    Woody Allen's SHADOWS AND FOG

STAGECOACH and CITIZEN KANE (sets with ceilings)

Any number of classic films noir or neo-noir pictures - eg, THE UNDERNEATH, TOUCH OF EVIL

Kurbick and Greenaway are the two I'd be looking to.

Eraserhead seems like an obvious choice, especially relevant to students because it accomplishes so much with so little money.
