My thoughts exactly. If I see some captures of the BD when it's released, and they look reasonable, I might be prepared to take one for the team and go guinea pig again. Depends on the money situation though...plus In the Realm of the Senses is coming out on BD around the same time and that's waaaaay higher priority for me in the scheme of things.

Well, looks like it wasn't just you and me, Mr. Jane! It seems the rabble over at everyone's favourite shill spot...erm, forum, agree...

...though it's modest response so far, the consensus seems to be that it looks like crap. Extras or not, looks like I might be importing the US BD afterall.

I'll wait for some full size caps to provide a better idea, but yeah, the contrast boosting there looks nuts.

There's a moderately interesting article on the history of the film's censorship toils in the UK here.

And a really interesting article, from a policy/historical context, about the film's censorship history from the BBFC themselves...

Nope, that's it - I'm going to buy the featureless US BD over the extras-packed UK edition, now that I've seen HD screenshots...

Note that, in the the short linked piece above, they've listed the Fremantle source as a theatrical PRINT, not a NEGATIVE? That would account for the shit image quality...

OK, well if there was any doubt before, DVD Beaver's review confirms that Freemantle fucked up this transfer in a big way.

I'll hold onto my DVD for the extras, but I'm not double dipping on that. The MGM Blu-ray will do fine.
