I found this video interesting. Two things jump out at me. Firstly, it's no wonder Star Wars was such a big deal. It's such an obvious jump when you put it next to the previous winners. Secondly for all the fuss about CGI there's very little dodgy CGI in this. Jurrassic Park is the only one that looks seriously dated. I think CGI really did mark a downturn in the quality of movies but when you see it in context like this it kind of makes the point that it's filmmakers lack of restraint rather than the gear that's the issue. Great CGI has been possible ever since it went mainstream.

I agree. CGI is excellent for background work and such. It is just laziness, or as you say, lack of restraint, that ruins it.

Was it IRREVERSIBLE where they used CGI to put a car window back in, only because they had to have the window down to get the camera in? That's tasteful use of technology, right there.
