Probably no one buying vids from a small online porn store thought those purchases were overly secure.

Somewhat related: I still own an iPod and up till earlier this year continued to purchase songs and albums from iTunes (I'm probably one of maybe 312 people still doing this in the world). Any time I would open iTunes and get a pop-up message to update the software version I would do it, just out of habit. About 6 months ago I plugged in my iPod to transfer some recent purchases after having done an update and when I went in to sync my device that option was no longer available. From what I can tell Apple is only allowing syncing with iPod Touch or iPhones but if you have an old school iPod Classic you're out of luck. I attempted to go back and download a previous software version but the only way you can sync is to do a full library transfer and since I don't have room on my 80GB Classic for everything in my library I would have to "like" all the stuff I want to transfer since the "sync only checked items" seems to have gone away too, even when using an older version somehow. I may be missing something, but I don't have the patience to figure it out.

All that to say that I knew this day would come but it's still a bummer to have bought over 1,000 songs and dozens of albums over a decade and then have your access to them blocked. I'd also uploaded hundreds of CD's which I no longer own so that music is essentially trapped as well.

I hate the idea of streaming music, so I bought a Marantz Bluray/SACD player and am devolving even further into obsolete media. I'm fucking old.

The company behind it is DMM so if they are not considered secure then pretty much nothing is (which to be fair is how I see all VoDs...).

They used to have English language option on their main site ( dmm.co.jp ) but moved it into the new domain long time ago. As far as I know r18.com had pretty good traffic, with over 200 000 titles available.

They could just move the purchases to their Japanese site (not sure how much effort it would take though and maybe there's some licensing issues), but it seems they won't.

Putting aside that this was for a porn site, where I don't think the usual rules apply, DMMs turnover is under a thousandth of Apples. They are not in the same conversation. Is anything 100% secure? Probably not. I 100% know that all physical media becomes obsolete eventuality. I've been through that cycle a few times and it's not a debatable point. My Google movies I genuinely expect them to outlive me, could be surprised but at least there's a chance.

Funny, I synced my iPod (80GB colour, no video, so REALLY old) to my 2020 Mac Book Pro running the current Apple Music app, and the only thing I had any catches with is that the DRM format on Apple Music subscription files isn't compatible with old iPods, so I can't sync anything I don't own or didn't rip myself.
