  • How do you do it? How do you constantly watch movies?

Just a general question because I get very easily burnt out on movies. I find myself at a point where I will not watch something randomly not unless I've heard good things about it or it was made by so and so or I came across a trailer or a clip that made it look good.

I try to keep an open mind of course but the instant I know where the plot is going to go I just instantly lose interest in it. Not unless it's a schlock kind of film and I'm watching it for the carnage or whatever other absurdities are in store.

For example: I thought I was completely done with Slashers. Completely done. Movies like Evil Laugh were the straw that broke the camel's back. But then a couple of months ago I came across Lake Nowhere (2014) and absolutely loved that one.

      same here.

drinking/drugs can help with movie watching tho. thing like vaginas and empty/dead buildings and bicycle riding are more fun to me now than staying inside for wholedaymovietime

To constantly watch movies is not desirable. Unless of course you feel like it. Hope this answers the question?

First some back ground with the year and the number of movies watched:
          2012-737
          2013-673
          2014-548
          2015-574
          2016-381
          2017-316

There are a shitload of things that have affected our lives in the past two years that have changed my viewing habits, but that would be best served under another thread. I should note that I am disabled and mostly homebound, so I do have lots of time to spend watching movies. But as I get older, I'm watching less.

As far as horror movies go (which is about 85-90% of what I watch), it seems like movies coming out are either:

1)Morons go to a cabin in the woods and bad shit happens
2)Zombies are loose, biting people on the ass and making more of them
3)People move into a new house after a tragedy and bad juju follows them
4)Teens start playing creepy games that unleash a terrible evil
5)Serial killers with various torture devices attack cardboard characters
6)Sharks. Soon they'll pop out of the toilet and eat your ass
7)Found footage. You wanna see some scary camera footage, take a look at my last colonoscopy video.

And yes, there are plenty of exceptions out there and I've enjoyed them.
I love my horror films, but damn, you can only watch them so many times before you can just go through it in your head without having to watch them.

Just trying to find something for Netflix has turned into a huge pain in the ass.

So I'm reading more and watching less. I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but I've gone from one extreme to another with film viewing.

I work a ten hour day. When I get home, I find watching a movie or two before bed is relaxing. Sometimes it is out of obligation because of reviews needed to be done and what not, but mostly it's out of fun. I still have a social life, Went out earlier today with friends for lunch and drinks, usually go out a few times a week, but movies are a fun way to unwind for me. If I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't do it. But I do enjoy it so it's all good. That doesn't stop me from going to concerts or hanging out with people I like to hang out with though. That's the great thing about home video - it's on my schedule and not the other way around.

The odd thing about my movie watching these days is that I watch a lot more crap than I do good films. I often put, say a Marvel movie on the in the background while I work. I would never do this for something I know I'm going to enjoy. So I'm actually pretty well up on trash I just rarely watch anything good anymore. Probably make the effort once a week.

We've generally got an older crowd here. Doing things obsessively is usually something that you do when you're younger. You've got a lot more free time when you're young, you're probably looking for things to define yourself by. Great movie experiences are easier to come by when you're young as well. I used to buy books of the 200 best films ever made etc and I hadn't seen any of them so I'd just work my way through the list. A lot of them weren't to my taste but I'd be watching a masterpiece or two a week that I'd never seen before. This is not possible anymore. Even if I tried really hard I can't see me digging out more than 4 or 5 gems a year.

Also the other thing is how good tv is now. There are no movies been made that are the quality of The Deuce, Fargo, Ray Donovan, Stranger Things, Preacher and I could keep going on and on. This did not use to be an issue because there wasn't much on telly. Now it's a time suck to keeep up. Movies are essentially a dead medium. It's hard to keep your interest when they've been overtaken by a new medium that's so much more exciting and could go anywhere at this point.

Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

True. Time is an issue and then you hear about a really good show and that's another massive investment of time.

I do the same thing - put something fairly easy to digest on in the background whilst I work. But I also have terrible sleep patterns and always have - I usually sleep for 5 hours per night and take a half hour/hour nap after my children have gone to bed (about 20h00). My wife usually goes to bed at about 22h00-23h00, so if I've got finished my work before midnight, I'll usually watch a film.

I think I've watched about 210 features so far this year. (I write them in my diary.) I usually average about 250 films per year, though when I was younger and had less commitments I could easily watch over 300 per year.

Always in the background, rarely in the foreground. I fall asleep to a movie every night, either a noir, a western, or a Bava or Jess Franco film. I think I've seen some of these movies dozens of times but never really sat through any of them. Really good stuff scares me. I gotta look at it side eye'd and from a distance. Warm up to it a little bit at a time.

Still haven't seen every Hitchcock, or Welles film. Or every film Charles Bronson's been in. Jess Franco will be the gift that keeps on giving throughout our lives, there's no way I'll see all his films! Or all the smut that SWV puts out.

New movies get watched in a trickle. I like to give things a 10 to 20 year buffer to make sure it's proper crap. Got to let the gossip settle down.

TV shows, as good as they are, become a hindrance for me. I can't stop watching it until I'm done and everything goes by the wayside. Movies are like a song I can put on in the background. TV shows demand my attention, thus my time! I prefer to spend my time with a movie on that I'm not watching.

Just where I'm at now. There's a nice kind of comfort in it.

Im with Paul and Dom. I watch a lot of crap. Why? Cause it helps me relax after work. And Im to fucking tired to do something more productive.

And once in a while, I stumble across something that is actually good, which to be quite honest is one of the most rewarding feelings there is, which is why I keep doing it.

I feel the burn out feeling Alex mentions once in a while, when I have not seen anything worthwhile in a long period of time. Then I start to question myself, and why I do what I do. But all it takes is one "hit" to make me feel it is worth it.

Personally, my movie watching habits haven't changed much. I essentially gave up on episodic TV decades ago.

I've never understood people who will bitch and moan about a 2 1/2 hour film being 'too long' or 'drawn out' --- YET, they will happily binge watch 21 episodes of some middling TV series in order to see "if it gets good". Watch a whole season because the next one is allegedly 'great'. Wade through several episodes which are nothing but spinning its wheels to pad out a season. Have characters show up - don't 'work out' - and then dropped without mention. Same with storylines that don't pan out to the producers liking -- Poof! Gone, without a trace (nevermind the three hours you spent watching that dead end! Sorry! NOT!) Etc. Etc.

Give me a two hour movie anytime. If it's good. Great. If it stinks. It's over in a couple of hours.

Note: I work behind the scenes in movies and TV shows. I see it first hand.
