Sounds like it's going to be a beast of a player & out of my price range but it has to have 2 things for me to be interested. 1) a relatively inexpensive mod available to make it region free & 2) a subtitle adjustment feature like the Oppo and Panasonic players...I use this feature quite a bit to move subs up and down and change the color of the subs to yellow as it's easier on my eyes.

Props to Oppo for still adding features and updating the firmware on a product no longer in production. The prices on the used market for Oppo UHD players are insane - between $1,200 ~ $1,500 & even more for region free models! I'm glad I bought two when they were still reasonably priced (one as a back up/investment for future sale).

Samsung is the latest major home electronics brand to exit the UHD/blu ray market in the US. Expect more big names to cease production of blu ray players with the increase in streaming media & decline in disc sales.

I'm not sure it matters. I'm guessing most disc players these days are in Xboxes and Playstations. As long as they're around people will have a way to play discs. When they're gone I think market becomes too small to be viable for anyone. The smart money is currently on the next generation of games consoles still having physical drives- no doubt UHD ones. So you're good for a while.

That's still some pretty major news, that a major retailer is just not supporting a new format anymore. Wow.

Yes, that's big. The whole "physical media is dead" has been overblown until this point. The end is truly near.

Time to decide on a few backup players to put into storage.

I don't know if I buy into that or not. I think that the "DVD still accounts for 57% of the market" is more indicative that people are just not buying into 4K as a viable media format. I certainly haven't, as the majority of major studio titles that have been released in 4K don't interest me that much.

I keep waiting for Netflix to go original content exclusive and dump "old" movies and shows altogether. It seems that most channels start out by showing old movies then slowly segue into original content. Then again they still offer their DVD service so who knows? I do wonder what the future holds for older content as streaming services gain steam.

Netflix is sure pushing their own content in the last while. It's like everything else is secondary.
