  • Say it ain't so....an end of an era. RIP OPPO!

I thought it was a belated April Fool's joke but apparently, it's legit. Oppo Digital has announced it will cease manufacturing any new products (disc players, dacs, headphones, etc) & shut down completely in a few months. I currently own 3 of their disc players (2 blu ray + 1 UHD) and know at least 5 regular posters on this forum who use their disc players (at least they mentioned it in passing). It is a sad day indeed. Always thought highly of their products and their excellent customer service with prompt replies to inquiries and constant firmware updates.

Oh well, guess the writing is on the wall in terms of streaming & downloads being the future of movie viewing in the home. I will have to move onto Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony, Samsung, etc to give me my physical disc player fix. I will continue to purchase physical media as long as they continue to make players to play them.

I think it's also got something to do with most people not caring enough to purchase something high end. When you can buy a 4K Panasonic in a cheap shell (the 300) for 150 bucks and still get top notch video quality, most folks aren't going to shell out 700 for the superior Oppo product.

Oppo discontinued a number of their products awhile back, but I did not see this coming.

Its a bummer for sure. Loving my 203. It will tempting to buy another one if I see it cheap. I'll feel better about being able to play PAL and region free DVDs long term if I had a backup Oppo.

I suspect that the price will go up and not down. With an easy-to-install mod from eBay, you can have code-free blu-ray playing as well. I just grabbed a 203.

Yeah, that's probably a major reason that Oppo called it quits but Panasonic just recently released a TOTL UHD player that makes the Oppo look like a bargain in comparison. SRP is > $1000.

So there must be a niche market for these higher end players, so I'm still rather surprised by Oppo's decision to pull out completely. Perhaps, Matsushita can afford to bring out a halo product for show and not really care about sales but I doubt it since the major Japanese electronics makers are hurting from the Korean and Chinese competition & have been for the last two decades. Just look what happened to Toshiba and Sharp.

I did the same and just pulled the trigger on another UHD-203 & purchased the region free mod kit as well while it's still being sold at its regular price. The remaining stock is going to appreciate considerably in price. No way, one is going to find any close out deals on these players or liquidation sales that's for sure.

I'll bet the prices will go up in the short term but eventually drop considerably. Those in the know will panic and buy now but Oppo will soon be forgotten. Used players will be much cheaper a year or two from now once support is dead.

I dunno, I just had my stepdad's Nakamichi stereo system passed on to me, and support for these products dropped years ago...they still command some pretty insane prices.

The UDP-205 (the expensive one) is already sold out.

One last chance to get a hold of an Oppo UHD player but you're going to have to cough up for the high end 205 model.

Pioneer might be stepping in to fill the Oppo void:
