  • Movies you've seen only once (and loved) and never want to see again?

Maybe a weird topic for film buffs, watching a movie that moved you only once and never wanting to return. Average film buff might tell you: "Only once? Are you crazy? I've seen Doctor Shivago and Bloodsucking Freaks over 100 times!" But what I mean is that you've seen a movie once and it left you at such a place that by re-watching it would rob you of the feeling(s) it initially gave you.

It's like a good joke. It made you laugh your ass off but when you hear it again you laugh less and less. Or getting a good scare. Insert a metaphor about getting high here.

For me it's been Tarkovsky's Solaris. The movie bored me a little bit to be quite honest. But the ending where our protagonist returns home and sees his father left a deep impression. I don't want that impression to go away if I choose to re-watch it.

Maybe Salo. I remember it being way well done and not trashy or low brow like I expected it to be. I remember it seeming sophisticated in a way. That said, if I watched it again I'd probably realize it wasn't.

Agree about Solaris. Stalker is also there.

As well as a few Kubricks, like Barry Lyndon and 2001 for example. Good films that I have no need to ever see again.

As for rewatching vs. not I would say the most rewatched films for me are in the action genre and genereally b-movies and sleaze etc.

Films that are "really good" which I like, such as Academy Award winners and dramas in general I do not even feel I need to own on DVD as I know I will not see them again, most likely, even if I loved em and gave em a 8/10 or higher on IMDB.

Maybe slightly different than what you're asking (sorry), but two movies I really liked but were disturbing enough (to me) that I have no desire to see them again are HARD CANDY (2005) and THE TORTURED (2010).

Probably some of the Westerns I've watched that were films recommended by film scholars. The Searchers, John Ford westerns etc.. Not my favorite genre but wanted to watch these films so I can say my appreciation of classic films is well-rounded.

Two stand out for me in the category of 'Good, but, too painful to sit through again": HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER and THE OFFENCE (a Sidney Lumet movie Sean Connery negotiated to do in exchange for doing one last Bond picture). Both are superb, but, just gut-punches.

THE GREAT SILENCE is a great film that I don't think I could sit through again.

If i liked a film, why would i never want to watch it again? Never say never. There are plenty of average ones i never want to see again.

The only ones i found a bit horrible/disturbing to watch again was Last House on the left and Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (as mentioned above), cant say i exactly liked them but they left some impression. it was years ago since i watched them but id never rule out watching them again.

Then there are the critically over-hyped ones which you watch out of a sense of duty but which leave you feeling "eh??". lots of those.

Actually, AUDITION was another one i watched years ago and found disturbing. However, i did get the blu ray (but never watched it yet) so cant say i will NEVER, EVER watch it again.

There are many that I haven't watched a second time for the reason you point out. There's also the possibility of watching something one-too-many times and maybe forever spoiling any future viewings (for me it's something like BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA or NIGHT OF THE CREEPS - not sure I could ever watch either of those again).

A recent one that I don't want to watch again for fear of spoiling the experience is MOTHER!. I saw it at the theater and it was incredible.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. I thought it was terrific with a beautiful score but I never want to sit through the animal deaths again. Also AFRICA ADDIO/AFRICA BLOOD AND GUTS for pretty much the same reasons.

The only reason I can think of not to watch something again is because I disliked it. There are plenty of films that I do not watch very often b/c they're so heavy but I know that I will watch them again eventually.

I want to see The Offence now. I had never heard of it before this thread so thanks for that!

Be prepared. You'll want to take a shower afterwards, it's that grimy. Connery is suberbly chilling, too.

THE OFFENCE is a truly great film, based on a play by John Hopkins called THIS STORY OF YOURS. Lumet takes the staginess of the material and makes it work for him, giving the picture an intense sense of claustrophobia only broken up by a few trips outside the police station where the outside world seems utterly alienating thanks to the 'new town' architecure and a wonderful, haunting scene between the protagonist and his wife.

I'm not sure whether I'd cite this, THE HILL or PRINCE OF THE CITY as my favourite Lumet film - but all three are excellent.

did not love this movie. pretty unforgettable tho.

went from funny to a chore and then took a turn.

most likely a bit on the drunk side when i saw this
