I dug this, a strange mix of romance and horror like Crimson Peaks but this one has obviously crossed over more successfully.

Interesting that the article mentions Jean-Pierre Jeunet. I thought there were some cinematic similarities between Shape and Delicatessen myself as well as the overall tone of Amelie. Not that I minded but interesting nevertheless. I thought Shape of Water was a nice fantasy romance but certainly not worth the accolades it has been getting.

I finally watched this one. The nudity surprised me, I definitely wasn't expecting it. Effects work and the aesthetics were top notch. It's depiction of the 60's was great. I think this could be Del Toro's best English Language film. My only complaint would be that it's a little overlong.

Also, Eliza's friends have a very blase' reaction to her committing bestiality. And part of me wanted it to end like Humanoids From the Deep. Overall, a good movie.

This is the only Del Toro film that I've outright disliked. It didn't click with me at all, I felt the tone was all over the place and it certainly didn't charm me with it's whimsy. I know the Oscars are meaningless crap, but I will never understand how this won.

Agreed with Alex. Very enjoyable movie, I liked pretty much everything about it.

I did keep thinking though, that by toning down the violence by a few seconds and omitting the ass fuck shot (wait, was it ass? Anyway, the one with Michael Shannon), this could've been a 12 rated movie by most European standards. There was a school girl sitting alone in front of me in the theatre - not sure if she was HS or JHS - and it made me realize this would probably play pretty well with young girls. And I'm not saying that as a bad thing. If I had a daughter, this is a movie I'd want her see (though the bits mentioned above would make me have her wait a few extra years compared to if it didn't have them).

Took me a long time to get to this one as it really didn't look like my sort of thing. Almost turned it off 30 seconds in as it really, really didn't look like my sort of thing. Then our heroine hops into the tub and starts fudding herself silly with great abandon. Wasnt expecting that! I put the remote to one side in case this was more than I expected.

Its an odd one. On one level it has all the sophistication of Harry and the Henderson. It feels like a kids movie. Then it's starkly presenting the racism and misogyny of the 60s and its definitely not a kids movie. And in a kids movie she definitely doesn't fuck the fish. I'm not sure I've ever loved a Del Toro movie. The early Spanish ghost stories have a bit to recommend them but I don't gel with anything else. This one is the most difficult for me to get my head around.

This film wasn't really my thing, I didn't understand all the praise and awards. It was alright, in a way. Now, when to comes to water creatures and stuff, I prefer the film that did poorly the year prior, in 2016, "A Cure for Wellness". That movie went in directions I did not expect, and it's one I do not understand how poor the reception was for it. I was eager to see it, and when I did, it was not all that I expected, but, hey, it was pretty good!

It's pretty much an odd porno for females. And fish.
