  • Favorite Animated Features

So I was thinking about The Secret Of Nimh this morning because I'm working on a Blu-ray review for it. I think it holds up well as a legitimately 'good' family friendly animated feature and I got to thinking about other animated movies that are rad. There are a lot of rad ones and also a lot of bad ones, especially the current crop, which seem intent of aping Pixar with more interest in styel than substance.

The vintage Disney stuff is great and as corny as it is I will always love Heavy Metal. Fritz the Cat and most of Bakshi's other stuff, especially Fire & Ice, are popular in my brain. Wizards too.

Fantastic Planet is fucking weird and I always associate it with a weird guy I went to school with who always wanted to watch it high - no one else had to be high, just him. The movie is not without merit though, it's definitely unique and the UK Blu-ray is pretty awesome.

Fantastic Planet is creepy looking. I dig Fire and Ice too. Recently, I really like Despicable Me. What about Rock 'n Rule? I remember that being kind of cool.

I guess I really don't have a favorite animated feature. I don't watch a whole lot of them, and none jump to mind as being awesome for me. Just entertaining.

Rock N Rule rocks and rukes. I forgot about that one. GREAT movie. Very strange.

I have Despicable Me but haven't gotten around to watching it yet. One day I will.

Watch it this weekend. Do what I tell you to do. It was fun and I tend to not like that stuff.

I like the old Disney stuff just for the artwork - it's just mind-numbingly, jaw-dropping beautiful stuff. I realize it makes me guilty of style-over-substance but when that substance is fascist-istic fairytale pap I think I get a pass.

That said, Pixar's work deserves all the praise it gets, period. They take that same old Disney attention to and respect for the craft but make it subservient to the storytelling craft. THAT is how it's done.

Was watching the BD of Ratatouille and, on the commentary track, director Brad Bird makes an El Topo reference, pushing it nerdily further after someone else's comment as El Topo Giggio. Fucking brilliant.
It's not going to suck itself...

It's an obvious choice maybe but I've still got a lot of love for the South Park movie.

I forgot about Ratatouille. I wanted to see that when it came out, didn't, and never bothtered with it on video. I should.

              It's good!

I remember trying to describe FANTASTIC PLANET to Frank Estrada, but I don't know how good a job I did.

Of the Bakshi features, I think I like HEAVY TRAFFIC the best, though HEY GOOD LOOKIN' is pretty good too.

That's the only Miyazaki movie I've ever seen and it kinda scared me.

Akira (Anime fans don't like this movie, I guess it's like Star Trek/Star Wars fans not liking 2001: A Space Odyssey)

                    Perfect Blue

Miyazaki's stuff is great. My Neighbor Totoro is my favorite. I also loved Kiki's Delivery Service and Ponyo.

Just got The Smurfs and the Magic Flute on BD. Love that one.

I love Fantastic Planet. I love most Bakshi's also, especially, Fritz, Coonskin, and Fire & Ice. Down & Dirty Duck is pretty interesting also.

                              That's a good list, Quot.

Re-Cobbled is such a great effort of crazy love.

I took a bunch of 8 or 9 year old girls to see Kirikou. They liked it, but mostly all they talked about afterwards was Kirikou penis. I bet Tolch would like it, too.
