  • RIP John Hurt

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrit...man-9707290?dw

I know him best from Alien and Frankenstein Unbound but he was a fantastic actor. He lived a good long life at least and was in tons of great pictures.

Elephant Man, Alien, and the severely underrated From the Hip.

THE ELEPHANT MAN is my favorite movie of all time, and Hurt was terrific in it. Very sad news.

R.I.P. A great actor worthy of all the accolades. I recently re-watched LOVE AND DEATH ON LONG ISLAND, the comedic retelling of DEATH IN VENICE and it's a B-movie elevated to a decent film solely by the sheer will of John Hurt. One of the few actors who could polish a turd.

Such a great talent - and how cool (and bad ass) was he as the 'War Doctor' in Doctor Who?

          RIP.

His character in The Proposition was pretty intense. That film and Alien are the two I like the best.

This particular passing saddened me more than I was expecting it to.

What I've found particularly striking about John Hurt's performances is how effectively he conveyed physical pain. If his characters were tortured or badly injured, you really believed it. Whether it's his chestburster convulsions in ALIEN, the 2nd half of NINETEEN EIGHTY FOUR, or even his bounty hunter from THE PROPOSITION writhing around after being mortally stabbed, he's the rare performer whose conveyance of pain really makes me go "Ouch".

Back to ALIEN: I think his performance is part of what makes the chest-burster such an effective scene. He just sells the concept that there's something inside him causing massive internal injury. The chest-burstings in the sequels seem merciful by comparison.

R.I.P. Mr. Hurt. Pain no more.

Spot-on, Curwen. I watched THE ELEPHANT MAN again to do my small part to honor the man. Your description of his acting ability is particularly insightful applied to this role. Even though it's my favorite movie, I hadn't watched it in over 15 years, perhaps close to 20, mainly because of how I react. It's rather embarrassing, but I spend at least half the screen time drying my eyes. (I was amazed that last night's viewing had the same effect on me as when I saw it in the theater upon its release in 1980 and every time since.) Poignant film, a deeply emotional performance by Hurt.
