The first one had the luck to be written / directed by a decent director ( McQuarrie)....whereas this is done by Edward Zwick....big difference in my mind..

I bet Cruise wanted Zwick to direct because they did THE LAST SAMURAI together. At least he's an experienced director, I'd be more worried if it was going to be directed by McG or a similar hack.

I have only eead one book in the series.....and it was the bloody one they turned into the first movie!!! (It was in a discount bin)....so I kinda knew most of the twists and turns of the movie....

The main problem for me, with the books, is the constant hyping of Reacher. I felt the film did right when they toned down this aspect. Cause storywise the books are really good. I hope this new film follows in the tracks of the first film, in this regard.

You're a classic contrarian, you get a big kick out of taking the piss out of something anyone likes. You didn't happen to be Lord Jon at AVM, did you? You and a couple others have done a really good job of sucking the fun out of this place. You always manage to insinuate stupidity for liking something. Bravo.

Pardon? You're one of my favorite writers here and obviously one of the most knowledge so sorry if I've caused offence. But I'm not real sure where that comes from. How does me not liking the constant hyping of the character insinuate that I think you're stupid? In fact I opened what I said with "I watched it a little while back and wasn't aware it was highly regarded by anyone. I might have watched it with different eyes if I did." Basically I'm saying I watched this while doing something else and was paying no real attention to it. I assumed it was trash and not something that was worth serious attention. The hyping of the character was the only thing that stuck with me. Other than that I was having fun taking the piss out of Tom Cruise which I reserve the right to do. He won't mind.

Certainly no urge here to suck the fun out of this place... And wasn't aware I was doing it either...

Haha...most of the talk of Reacher telling everyone how dangerous he is is probably to get around the fact that Cruise is not the same physical build as the Jack reacher in the books...as far as i remember he was a huge dide in the books so therefore people could tell by looking at him how dangerous he is...Cruise had to keep reminding people as he is short and not really inimidating

Cruise is undoubtably the star f these things..he has a huge name and a huge amount of baggage he brings to every role he does...REACHER was a relatively low key movie compared to most of his stuff..I know a lot of REACHER fans were annoyed at Cruise being in this...but it was one of his better made movies of recent years..good source material helps a lot!

I'm surprised the first one gets so much love. I watched it a little while back and wasn't aware it was highly regarded by anyone. I might have watched it with different eyes if I did. To me it just felt like the film was there to bolster up Cruise's ego. How many scenes are there in this where characters tell each other how dangerous Reacher is? Or where Reacher tells them how dangerous Reacher is? It's so desperate to big up this character that by the end of it you just feel kind of sad for Reacher. The man must have serious ego issues to have keep carrying on like that. He needs to watch himself some Shane. That man knew how to let people know he was the biggest man in the room without actually telling them "you know I'm the biggest man in the room!"

Agreed. It's an awesome action thriller, and I think Cruise was fine as Reacher.

Bonus points for Robert Duvall in a fine supporting role and Werner Herzog as the ultra creepy villain too. That last scene between him and Cruise is killer.

I really, really like the first one. It's got a great, dense plot (and hopefully they are basing this one on another of the books) and the cast was all around solid. Too bad Rosamund Pike won't be in this one I guess. I think she's terrific. Anyway, JACK REACHER holds up really well, in fact I just watched it again not long ago. Whatever your opinion of Cruise (and I can take him or leave him), he's very good in this role. I have actually been wondering if he would make a sequel...so this is great news. Can't wait!
