SHE IS WATCHED. SHE IS WORSHIPPED. AND SHE MUST REMAIN A MYSTERY.

In the early eighties British enfant terrible Ken Russell travelled to America and placed his unorthodox imprint on a pair of US movies. The first was the Altered States, so out-there its screenwriter disowned it. The second was the equally crazy Crimes of Passion, starring Kathleen Turner (Body Heat, Serial Mom) at the height of her powers.

Fashion designer Joanna Crane (Turner) leads a double life. By night she is China Blue, a prostitute who's attracted the unwanted attention of two men. One is a sexually frustrated private detective hired by her employees. The other is psychopathic priest (played by Norman Bates himself, Anthony Perkins) in possession of a murderous sex toy.

With its outré screenplay by Barry Sandler and over the top score by Rick Wakeman, Crimes of Passion may just be the most outrageous Ken Russell film ever made - and that's quite some feat!

I loved it back in the day, but don't remember most of it.

One of my favorite Russell films. It's really a strange film the way it fuses some pretty heavy dramatic material with all the outrageousness but Russell makes it work. In the hands of the wrong director it could have very well been turned into a middlebrow Lifetime movie of the week type of thing but with Russell at the helm it becomes a filthy, garish, neon drenched 80's as fuck sideshow complete with an obnoxiously awesome Rick Wakeman score and Anthony Perkins on amphetamines wielding a vibrating dildo dagger while still keeping the serious drama in tact! With the possible exception of Serial Mom, Turner was never better. And it really can't be understated how insane Perkins is.

Not really much in the way of new extras. A pass for me.

Agree it's a knock out of a film. Saw it when new ( skipped out of work early and caught a afternoon matinee for cheap on opening day ),
always liked it but upon revisiting it a few months ago it proved to be even better & more cohesive than I had recalled.
The dynamic between Perkins and Turner is wonderfully done.....there's no there film quite like it!

That said I may be OK with the DVD.

            And another atrocious cover!

I have owned this since forever and never got around to watching it. Might see if I can find time for it tonight.

Finally got around to watching this. Not what I expected at all. I suppose I envisioned a kind of trashier, more operatic Body Double while what I got was... What did I get? Really don't know what to make of that at all. I guess I enjoyed it. What I love about it most though is the thought that someone- someone with balls of steel- had to present that screenplay to Kathleen Turner. And that screenplay, if I'm remembering correctly, would have had "Whore" on the cover page...

Here we go again, Where Are Those China Blues?

More coloring issues, although it must be said, and Lucas does make a major point of it, that the scene under scrutiny was bright on the old DVD release too.

With all respect to Tim Lucas, I'm not really seeing it - and a shot taken from a screen on a digital camera throws in all sorts of variables. Eg, what was the white balance setting on the, presumably digital, camera used to take the shot from the plasma screen; adjusting the white balance setting or having it set incorrectly would change the level of blue within the image, making the whites seem more blue or vice versa - this scenario would account for Lucas not recognising the difference until he put the images from the BD and the shots he took with his camera from the LD side by side (as stated in the blog post).

I've yet to watch my CRIMES OF PASSION Blu. I used to own the same US LaserDisc and would like to look at this myself, but I'll be damned if, after a number of house moves, I know where my LaserDisc version of the film is.

I like this theory. Send it to Tim.

Gotta say I find this "issue" very difficult to get worked up about.
