the only thing I ever heard about it is that tarantion wanted to direct a faithful adaption of ian flemings book with a tougher, older brosnan character, but producers told him his vision was “unfilmable”. yet ... they almost immediately revisited the idea without his involvement and with a new actor, once the potential project sparked much public interest.

brosnan (more or less) confirmed this last year

Here's an article from 2004 in which Brosnan discusses pitching the CASINO ROYALE idea to Tarantino - the incident referenced in the NME article you linked to. I also remember some interviews with Brosnan from '06 or '07 (ie after the Craig CASINO ROYALE adaptation) in which he discussed this, but these were pieces that I most likely read in magazines or newspapers and may not be online.

And another snippet here. It seems Goldfrapp were on board to score a CASINO ROYALE film before the direction of the project was changed following the casting of Craig.

      • I've had this sitting on a memory stick waiting to be watched for a week and oddly only finally got to it last night. The girlfriend insisted on a rewatch of Spectre which I think had something to do with the delay. Oddly uninspiring movie Spectre. Generally I rate the Craig era a lot higher than the board consensus. I think Casino Royale and Skyfall are all timers. As good as any Bond picture. Quantum is a fucking disaster and Spectre.... Well Spectre just is. Two from Four is not bad for a Bond. Brosnans had none from 5. Dalton none from 2. Moore had far more clunkers than hits. Only Connery batted over .500.

That said there are some annoying points that are unique to this era. I hate that the films aren't stand alone. Every time Mr White is mentioned I have to mentally range back over the series trying to remember who he was. I think he's mentioned in every film without being a person of serious importance. There's years between Bond films, we can't be expected to follow them like they are tv. I don't like how this Bond is perennially in conflict with his bosses. Bond is a company man. It's one of his defining traits. More than anything I've come to not enjoy Craig's portrayal of the character which seems particularly joyless, even more so now that he's old and angry.

When it comes to the final film I don't have a lot to say. This is a lot like Spectre. It's very long, very grim and it is absolutely fine. There's nothing particularly wrong with it- enraging finale aside. Like Spectre it just kind of lays there though. There's nothing to get excited about. Just feels like a lack of inspiration all round. I guess the Ana Dr Armas sequence was fun. How everything stayed inside that very minimal dress provided some interest and she was a rare fun character.

Moneypennys getting very uppity for a secretary isn't she? Couldn't quite work out what she was supposed to be in this.

        • It's been a few weeks since seeing NO TIME TO DIE in the theaters. I enjoyed it. While it is long, I was never bored or looking to eject. I felt it moved at a good pace. I loved the opening. It was so cool seeing the DB5 getting an opportunity to shine. I loved all of the the references/nods to ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. That alone enhanced my enjoyment greatly. Just like SPECTRE, there were some things that I disliked greatly, but I was able to look past those and not let them ruin the entire film. Those bad moments/decisions [SPOILERS] (the death of a well known character, assigning 007 to a new agent) [/SPOILERS] may make re-watches less enjoyable but it definitely didn't ruin the many moments that I adored.

          random thoughts:
          - I thought the end was fitting, while the rest of my family were upset by it.
          - Lyutsifer Safin is a weak villain but nowhere near as lame as Quantum's Dominic Greene. I did like the scene when we first see him out in the country.
          - Primo was a silly henchman. He was a minus.
          - Love the Bio-lab infiltration scene
          - Blofled was wasted in the film, but I was so disappointed with the long lost brother story arc that I'm not sure I cared.
          - Loved the action and the fanservice.
          - I glad the new 007 lady didn't amount to much. It made it easier to ignore.
          - Love Jeffrey Wright's Felix Leiter. One of my favorite characters of the series. [SPOLIER] Kinda wanted to walk out the theater thinking Bond and Leiter would someday retire to a Caribbean island and meet in the morning for drinks each day. Felix dying was a difficult blow for me which made Bond's death palatable. [/SPOILER]

I still love GOLDENEYE to this day, but have grown to hate Brosnan's other Bonds more each time I watch them. I wonder if 20 years from now I'll feel the same about Craig's run of films. I have no doubt CASINO ROYALE will remain my favorite Bond Film until the day I die. I do wonder if the silly Blofled brothers story line and Craig's Bond regularly going into hiding like he's a Jedi knight, doesn't have me slowly growing to hate the sequels. I also hate Judi Dench's, M is for Mommy issues, more with each film. I love the action and fanservice in Craig's Bonds so that might be enough to overcome those shortcomings, but perhaps not. Is Blofled and Bond being brothers any less stupid than giant space lasers and Billionaire playboys using Face/Off machines? Not really.

The thing that makes me think I might grow to appreciate the Craig sequels more over the years is that after initially hating Quantum of Solace, when I saw it in the theater, I've grown to enjoy it more each time. It not just the stellar action, but I rally enjoy Mr. White and the mysterious Organization. So who knows.

Before Craig I always knew no one could do Bond better than Connery. And as much as I love Connery as Bond, I do like Craig better. I don't like when he pouts and quits, but there are so many other great moments that more than make up for his short comings.

I'm confident that the next Bond film will be entertaining. But if they do something stupid I won't really care either. I can always rewatch the old stuff. I greatly enjoy more than half the Bond films.

          • Regardless of how history regards the Daniel Craig run of Bond films, I don't think any Bond movie theme will EVER top You Know My Name by Chris Cornell, from Casino Royale.

            • Late to the party. Got the 4K disc from my parents. Watched SPECTRE a few weeks back in preparation; I still don't like that one, outside of the opening in Mexico City.

This one was just alright. Wayyyyy too long, I thought. Somebody here said that Malek is forgettable as the villain, and as a big fan of Malek's....yes, it's true.

I like Craig. I LOVED Casino Royale. I thought that Skyfall was damn near perfect. Quantum of Solace is garbage. In the end, I think it's time for a new Bond, anyway.

              • Rewatched Casino Royale ahead of watching the last film and it stands up really well, especially when it hits the meat of the novel with the poker games and the torture scene. Enjoyed No Time to Die, not spectacular but solid entry with a strong opening with the assasin and the mother and daughter.

My cable streamer has all the older Bond films available so I think I'm going to revisit some of the Moore films I haven't seen since I was a kid/teen like Live & Let Die and A View to a Kill with Kotto and Walken as villains being the main attraction for me.

                • I've rewatched Casino Royale a bunch of times. I think it's great. My only reservation is the weird structure. The film feels done when Bond is rescued from the dungeon with his bollocks still, largely, intact. Then, just when you're waiting for the credits, it goes again for another half an hour. It's not terrible like the gutshot finale of Django Unchained but I think it does make for some weird pacing.

                  • Live & Let Die is a very odd film, let alone an odd Bond film. A little too rambling with some painfully failed humour featuring a southern sheriff but the blaxploitation flavoured first half is fun before is starts to ramble and the climax is absolutely ridiculous. Jane Seymour and Gloria Hendry are superfoxy though, a shame the Bond films never dabbled in some 70s flashes of nudity.

                    • Moonraker: Another one of those films I watched as a youngun' and needed to come back to. As a youngun' this infuriated me. How could they do that to Bond?! Coming back to it now there's a bit to recommend. It's more in the line of eurotrash like Deadlier Than The Male than a Bond but it has a Bonds budget allowing for those incredible sets and those stunts. The opening scene where Bond goes skydiving without a parachute is particularly good. Entertainment value aside though, what utter trash! Doctor Goodhead? Bond master of the single entendre. Bond, it also has to be mentioned, is a complete dick in this. I don't like Moore as Bond generally but he was particularly detestable in this. Not so much chauvinist as creepily lecherous like the deranged uncle you don't leave alone around your kids. Bonus points for Coleen Cleery turning up in a minor role and massively outshining the other Bond girls on offer. She should have had a bigger career.

                      • The word is the next Bond is Arron Taylor-Johnson. I have no idea who that is. A quick browse of his filmmorgraphy says I've seen a few things with him but he hasn't made an impression on me. By god I hope they go back to the 50s with the new series... It does seem the most likely. It's hard actually to see how they would do it otherwise. Another modern day origin story? That would suck. Just picking up with a disconnected adventure of the week after the Craigs did a full arc? Feels a bit cheap. They really do have to go back. Besides, Bond's feeling more and more anachronistic. It's hard to take that kind of spy seriously these days.

                        • A retro Bond film could be great.

Ultimately I'm not too bothered by who plays Bond. I thought Daniel Craig was really strong, but two of those films were bad, one mediocre and two were great. I love OHMSS despite Lazenby.

If they invest in a good script and second unit director, then they can cast pretty much anyone who can act convincingly tough, look like they can pleasure the ladies and deliver a curt one liner.
I'm bitter, I'm twisted, James Joyce is fucking my sister.

                          • The first fruit of Amazon's massive investment in Bond is now live on Amazon and it is... a Race Around The World reality series called 007 Road To A Million. Facing facts, it's a bit shit. It's not for want of effort. They ship the contestants around the world to some very Bond locations- there's a lot in the Carribean- but they've dropped the ball conceptually. They should be having to defuse bombs, win at baccarat etc instead they have to get to a location and then, for some reason, answer a multiple choice question that is usually history based. Not sure what that has to do with Bond...

They've got Brian Cox in for a day to sit in a broom closet and direct the action via voice over. Which is just odd. They haven't set him up as a villian or as an M. He's just there.

The one interesting part of the production is getting to see how little historical knowledge these Brits have. There should be a federal inquest into the education system over there after this.

Most people wear their stupidity as a badge of honour over here now. Teachers are more concerned about hurting the feelings of children rather than teaching them any meaningful history now, which is just a catalogue of isms apparently.

There was a fake multiple choice history quiz given to a bunch of school kids about ten years ago. One question requiring an answer of a real historical person had Gandalf as an option, and it scored disproportionately higher than the real people available. But this country will always need road sweepers, baristas (my company employs a full time one, despite hardly anyone working in the office anymore) and telephone sanitisers. The government is hell bent on ensuring that people are kept in education until 18, whereas a good percentage of these kids would be better suited to getting some menial job at 16, so they can get their mothers off their backs.
