  • Apocalypse Now And Its Five Hour Work Print

"The 5-hour-long version of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, moreover, is considered to be the Holy Grail among them. Now, we're excited beyond words to share with you the 289-minute version of this classic picture. Just so we give you time to let it sink in—if the theatrical release print lasted 153 minutes, and if the Redux issue offered 202 minutes of the film, this means this rough cut gives us the priceless chance to enjoy an additional hour and a half of Coppola's groundbreaking study of human nature. Before you start enjoying this highly educational ride, let us prepare you for what you're about to witness."

If you want a break down of what is included in that work print, it's all broken down here:

The whole thing has been uploaded to youtube in four parts.

Interesting, I remember seeing a bunch of this stuff on VHS in the early 90's. But if REDUX taught me anything, it's that the theatrical cut is awesome.

I agree with Mark. Redux is fine, but the theatrical cut is better. Less is more, as they say.

Less is probably more in this case.....but it will be neat to see how a 5 hour movie gets cut down to an awesome 2 1/2 hour one.

Is this an official release? I've seen the work print before and it's interesting in a meditative kind of way.

Nah, just YouTube links with a written breakdown. Interestingly whoever wrote the article didn't know about the 'Kurtz' name change, which I thought was pretty basic trivia.

I'm automatically skeptical about any website that has articles with titles like "Francis Ford Coppola's 'Apocalypse Now' must be the key lecture in anyone's filmmaking education".

I've had this cut of the film for ages, since the good old days of eBay, when work prints and the like were available. The quality is mediocre, but watchable (think about 3rd gen VHS), but as a fan of the film, it's interesting to see what was taken out, and what was left in. It's an incredible film in any version, but if you're a big fan, it's worth checking this out.

I doubt it will ever happen, but I'd love to see the footage with Keitel before he was fired and Sheen was brought in in the lead. It's questionable whether that footage even exists anymore. I gotta say; I love that Coppola is cool with releasing multiple versions of his films. For example, his THE OUTSIDERS: THE COMPLETE NOVEL breathes new life into the film, especially if you're a fan of the book.

Yeah, the only thing about Outsiders that doesn't work for me is replacing the soundtrack throughout the film. And why did they cut the "Watch your smoke" line? But that's a whole other thread. :)

Interesting....I actually liked the fact that FFC replaced the original score by his father with music from the era. It's truer to the novel in some senses, as it mentions some of the artists used, like Elvis. Personal preference, I suppose.

I guess I should clarify that for two reasons...one, the song selection. They're on a train, Mystery Train plays. Cutting hair, it's Lend Me Your Comb. The silliness of the placement bothers me. And the fact that the audio track from the rumble is now buried under instrumental fight music makes me wonder what Coppola was thinking...I suppose I'm surprised that he didn't use Link Wray's "Rumble" for it.

Valid points, for sure. I actually agree about the rumble instrumental music...it stands out as an odd choice, you're right. Link Wray would have been AWESOME.

I'm just happy "The Complete Novel" version got released. It's a great film, and more of it is a welcome addition.

While we're on the subject of THE OUTSIDERS, S.E. Hinton never wrote anything better. THE OUTSIDERS is the pinnacle of her talents, IMO. Great, great book which I've read more times than I can remember.

How do you watch a five hour movie... Schedule it over a few nights ? A single butt numbing Marathon? At 5 hours it's really not a movie anymore. I'm not sure what it is, cause it's not like it's a miniseries either... But I think a movie really does need to be realistically digestible in one session.

Start in the morning, watch it throughout the day! If you're just having a lazy weekend day, what a great way to spend it!

Yup. I also really like That was Then, This is Now and Tex, but The Outsiders is her best, and the best film adaptation,
