This is genuinely monumental. LA Plays Itself is an incredible film, and Sextool currently exists only in extremely poor quality bootlegs. 4K restorations suggests they've uncovered new elements as well, the 16mm print of LA that VS were streaming looked fairly good, but had obviously been severely faded. I'd always hoped these would get proper restored releases, but I didn't think it would actually happen.

I doubt that what they have for this version of “LA Plays Itself” is better than what's currently online. I saw these both at the last MOMA screening, and “Sextool” was a revelation as far as picture and sound quality but still had a big green scratch running down the middle the entire time, apparently that has been fixed for the new restoration.

I just realized that there's no mention of “Sex Garage” if that's not included that would be extremely disappointing

It will be included, as far as I'm aware.

Altered Innocence did a really good job on their "Equation to an Unknown" blu ray so I'm sure "LA Plays Itself" and "Sextool" will also look nice on blu ray. Hopefully, "The Destroying Angel" and "Falconhead" get consideration for future blu ray releases.

The piece linked in the Score thread says they will be releasing some of Arthur Bressnan's work too.

Their website page for the release lists Sex Garage as well.

If you're still on the fence about getting this release, maybe my interview with Elizabeth Purchell (Special Features Producer) will help you make that decision! Really terrific work that Altered Innocence did with this release.

Always thought there should be more fisting in the musuem of modern art! I absolutely agree these films need preserving, but with limited funds to spend I am guilty of sticking with the straight stuff when it comes to buying because that's where my interests lie. This set does sound really interesting though. It's a shame that exploitation.tv is no longer around, I think a wider audience would check them out.
I'm bitter, I'm twisted, James Joyce is fucking my sister.

That's a fine interview, and I like that it foregrounds the frustration of seeing even VS flail with these releases. That lowest of the low quote says so much.

Liz Purchell: The way I always describe these films is that they're the lowest of the low. They're not just porn, they're gay porn. The typical exploitation and genre film world could not give a shit less about these films, since it's a very straight, white fanbase.

Hopefully you took that quote with some humor! It's definitely mean to capture how difficult it is to sell these releases when there's still so much stigma surrounding gay porn in general.

Still haven't cracked the cellophane on my copy, but who here doesn't love some lowest of the low?

Obviously thrilled to get this release on blu. Never thought it would happen. Hopefully we get more gay xxx releases from AI in the near future.
