I finally got my first chance since the launch to sit down and watch something all the way through, so I chose the film I'd most been looking forward to: Fred Halsted's elusive LA Plays Itself. After reading the hype and waiting a couple of years for a watchable uncut copy to turn up I was expecting to be a bit disappointed.
Nope. It really is a fucking masterpiece and it was totally worth the wait. Gorgeous cinematography, wonderful experimental montage and double-exposures, and a great soundtrack. Plus, the fisting scene at the end is enough to make all your internal organs try to escape through your mouth. The print may be a bit scuffed up but VS have done a great job trying to restore the colours, it's still clearly badly faded but very watchable. If you're not put off by a bit of rough homo-sexin' then I can't recommend it highly enough.
If rough hetero banging is more your style, then Exploitation.TV has a FULL LENGTH 73 min print of The Blue Balloon! For comparison the version released by Alpha Blue and After Hours runs a paltry 53 mins. Holy shit what an absolute goldmine of previously unavailable smut!
The only major downside so far is the trouble the encoding has with the grain structure of rough 16mm material. It'll never be perfect, but once all the teething troubles are sorted out and VS have some time on their hands it'd be great if they could look at tweaking their encoder settings to deal with grain better without making the file sizes too big.
