  • José Bénazéraf

Did a search both with and without accents and only turned up result so why not an enire José Bénazéraf thread? I've been on a bit of a Bénazéraf kick as of late which just as with José Ramí³n Larraz has consisted of mostly boots. I know K-Films released several of Bénazéraf's films on DVD in France a few years ago and there other French DVD from different companies but much of his work is in dire need of COMPLETE, English friendly releases. His early stuff at least before he became a full on porn director, although ironically some of his 80's porno's are on Amazon.

As far as I can tell the only fully uncut English friendly DVD release for any of his films is Sexus (La Nuit Plus La Longue, 1965). I know Something Weird sells a DVD-R of the English dubbed version of his debut film L'éternité pour nous (1963) as Sin On The Beach which runs about 25 minutes shorter than its full French version and Le concerto de la peur (1963) was released as Night of Lust as a butchered 58 minute re-edit. Frustrating to say the least.

Speaking of frustrating, Frustration (1971) is one of the best films to come from the golden age of Euro erotica/horror, defiantly his masterpiece if you ask me. Janine Reynaud gives what has to be her best performance. I've watched it 3 times in the past few months. I've always loved it but its quickly becoming one of my favorite films.

That would be why. I own Sexus but haven't watched it yet. Actually I forgot I had it so thanks for the heads up. I really would be totally unaware of him except for the writeup in Mondo Macabro. From that I pictured his films being along the Joe Sarno line maybe?

Must be something unpleasant going on with the rights to his films. I'm sure Mondo Macabro for one would be keen to snap up the rights if they were available.

I think there's some issue with the rights over Benazeraf's films which has held back any DVD releases.

There was a good documentary on Benazeraf as part of Channel 4's Eurotika series in 1998/1999:

'You know, I'd almost forgotten what your eyes looked like. Still the same. Pissholes in the snow'

Defiantly give it a watch sometime, its fantastic. Starts off as a gangster/kidnapping thriller but becomes more twisted once Stockholm Syndrome comes into play. Moody and tense as hell with an absolutely brilliant Chet Baker score.

I've been meaning to delve me into his stuff, but as of yet I've only seen Bordell SS, which was pretty dire, even with Brigitte Lahaie in tow!

When it comes to hardcore I'm pretty whatever but in the case of Bordel SS my curiously got the better of me simply because one, its Bénazéraf, two, its Bénazéraf doing nazisploitation and three, its Bénazéraf doing nazisploitation with Brigitte Lahaie!

Try and seek out his early stuff. The three that are probably the easiest to track down are Sexus, Frustration and his 1966 transgressive gangster film Joí« Caligula which was banned by the French censors the night before it was supposed to premier. Along with royally pissing Bénazéraf off that cost him some serious coin and played a big hand in him eventually getting fed up with making "normal" films and crossing over into hardcore territory.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll have to check those out. Amazon also seems to have one of his 80s adult features under the Caballero label, and I know The Chambermaid's Dream had a Private Screenings VHS release back in the day.

Selling for $40 used on Amazon too! Pretty sure most of the boots are sourced from that tape. That title always cracks me up, surly one of the most absurd re-titles. I can't gush about that one enough. If any of his films should have had a special edition by now its that one. On paper it might seem like a Euro trash riff on Polanski's Repulsion but it quickly becomes a beast of its own. Really sticks in your head and again, Janine Reynaud is beyond fantastic.

                NSFW by the way :)

Caballero has at least 3 of his films out, HOT CLOSE-UPS, MAKING OF A PORNO MOVIE and OLINKA, GRAND PRIESTESS OF LOVE but these by the book adult features, only about an hour long. Really, only for someone that wants to see all his films (if I remember they were shot on video also).

Is there an English friendly version of Bordel SS even available? I know there's an Italian language DVD...

I doubt it. The boot I saw was Italian only which I didn't know about until the movie started.

There's an English subtitled boot floating around but I don't know what the source was. As it's 16:9 I assume it came from a DVD.

                          Subs here:

I think they are synched to the DVD.

Great, now only if that were the case for L'éternité pour nous and Le désirable et le sublime!
