  • The Joe D'amato thread!

    AKA THE JIZZ MAESTRO!

Or Aristide Massacessi. One of the great Italian genre directors and also producer (a fact overlooked by a lot of dudes) who helped keep the genre alive in the late 80's and early 90's through his company Filmirage. Similar in some ways to Corman in the variety of films he made, doing a lot of non-conventional pictures, and helping to launch a few careers in the process. Though he considered filmmaking to be more of a business than an art some of his best films defy this mentality with some truly stunning cinematography on top of that. Also considered to be one of the nicest Eurocult directors with no one involved with him having any bad things to say. A true legend in the B/Exploitation/Horror/Porno genres.

    Aristide Massaccessi

    1936-1999

My favorites of his films would probably be:

    Anthropophagus
    Emanuelle in America
    Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals
Buio Omega (AKA Beyond the Darkness)
    Death Smiles at Murder
    Caligula 2: The Untold Story
    2020 Texas Gladiators
Images in a Convent (the most well shot Porn EVER)
    Absurd

And on that note, before his death D'amato was planning a 3rd Anthropophagus film having seen the response the two films have gotten through the horror fandom. Damn shame he never made it. Lest not forget that he gave Michele Soavi his big break and produced one of the great Eurocult/Slasher films Stage Fright.

I once bought Messalina, I didn't own it long. I thought Caligula 2 was ok. The horse scene was a bit excessive in C2 as it is in Emmanuelle in America also. The problem I have with Joe D'Amato films is that they are neither one thing nor the other. They are not really feature porn nor are they mainstream either, but a mishmash of both and they don't quite work for me. But then again I have only even seen a handful of titles. Maybe Ive seen the wrong ones. I know every goes on about Emmanuelle in America as being a classic, but I think that's mainly due to the shock value.

Just watched this yesterday, don't recall seeing it before. If I had, I put it out of my mind. I agree that it's well shot but can't quite get behind it being "the most well shot Porn EVER." I didn't realize it would go into hardcore territory so that was a bit surprising to me but this was fairly well done. I liked the ending with the priest going through the halls doing his thing and the nuns going nuts behind the doors of their cells and then heading out into the halls to 'get him.' Thought that was a pretty interesting mix of crazy and sexy. The whole justification for their behavior stemming back to the pagan idol was silly but I don't necessarily have a problem with silly in nunsploitation movies so it didn't bug me. Pretty good movie though. The transfer on the Media Blasters disc is flat and non-anamorphic and doesn't really do it justice, but the oodles of trailers on the second disc are fun to sift through.

I think my favorite of his films is ANTHROPOPHAGUS. I know a lot of people find it terribly boring but not me, I think the first half or so does a great job of establishing an uneasy atmosphere (and there are a few well placed scares as well) and the prolonged chase later is quite tense. A couple of deservedly legendary gore scenes too. Unfortunately, I don't much care for ABSURD, bores me silly. Would have been interesting to see what another one would have been like.

I also don't much like EROTIC NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD or PORNO HOLOCAUST (though I love their scores, especially the latter - D'Amato really got some amazing work out of Nico Fidenco in their collaborations), both unsuccessfully (imo) attempt to blend horror and sex but end up far too tedious though I'll admit they have an effective scene here and there, mainly EROTIC. I do have some fondness for his nunsploitation stuff, and really dig DEATH SMILES AT MURDER, which is something of an oddity in his filmography. Again, amazing score for that one too, so gorgeous.

D'Amato was a first rate cameraman, he shot a lot of spaghetti westerns and did terrific work.
I don't go to church. Kneeling bags my nylons.

I bought PORNO HOLOCAUST years back solely because of the title.

The middle portion of the film (Particularly the boat ride) is pretty dull and the camera work is below par for D'amato but the 3rd act fucking kills it. Amazingly good 3rd act.

I really like BUIO OMEGA, ANTROPHOPHAGUS and DEATH however I'm stunned at how bad ENotLD is.
Since watching ENotLD recently I'm afraid to watch PH now.

Porno holocaust is pretty bad. The zombie appears really briefly in a more comic than arousing situation and looks pathetic. It plays on Zombie or zombie holocaust quite a bit. There is hardly any sex and no gore. It fails both as a porn and/or horror. There actually is some entertainment value however, but I watched it without subs so had to piece together what was going on. To be honest it isn't hard. I sold my copy and kind of regret it now.

                  So no more warty balls?

Maybe I'll give it a try.

Ironically I have never seen erotic nights of the living dead in its entirety. The warty balls thing has put me off for life I think.

You've probably already seen his warty balls. I remember some dude on AVmaniacs used them as his avatar.

Reviving this thread, instead of creating a new one, for questions. Has Endgame or 2020 Texas Gladiators ever gotten a legit release beyond VHS? I have found some versions of 2020 on YouTube in the 86 to 87 minute range, although I rented this on VHS from Media, I think, with a full 90 minute running time. Where is the uncut, English version? The YouTube prints have a little Italian at the beginning and then switch to English. Why doesn't one of those specialty cult movie DVD / Blu-ray labels release these?
