  • Demons & Demons 2 Coming From Synapse

I'm gonna split this off from the regular Synapse thread.

So yeah, this is officially announced now...

We wanted to keep everyone updated on DEMONS and DEMONS 2 and we're pleased to announce a little surprise with these two titles. Synapse Films has been approached by Scanavo, the makers of the Steelbook cases for Blu-ray and DVD, and we have decided to do something a little special for the fans.

As many of you know, for the past few years, Synapse has done “Limited Edition” versions of some of our titles near the holidays. We did the limited edition BLU of INTRUDER with the workprint (sold out in 3 weeks) and, last year, we did the limited edition BLU of THE DEFINITIVE DOCUMENT OF THE DEAD (only a couple hundred left).

This year, we've decided to do Limited Edition Steelbooks for both DEMONS and DEMONS 2, with exclusive new cover art by the amazing Wes Benscoter. While the street date is expected to be around November, anyone who orders the Limited Editions will be getting theirs shipped as soon as they are done and available (we'll ship them as soon as they come in to our offices, regardless of street date). These LE Steelbooks will NOT be available in stores and 3000 units will be available direct from our website right here at www.synapse-films.com. Once the units are sold out, they will no longer be available. These are ONE PRESSING ONLY items. Once the Steelbooks are gone, they are gone forever and will NOT be repressed. At this time, we have no plans to release these two films in standard packaging.

The price for the Steelbooks will be $39.95 + $6.00 shipping, for a total price of $45.95 each. We will ship on a first-come, first-served basis (we'll ship the orders in the order in which they are received).

While the discs are not yet 100% finalized, this is what we can tell you:

So it sounds like they're going to be selling direct only and taking a Twilight Time style approach by limiting these to 3k per title, steelbook versions only.

I'd imagine there's going to be some controversy over this.

The way I originally read it was that like Document of the Dead, there will be a standard version, and a Synapse direct only ltd version. But it's not really clear if that is the case or not.

I read it as they (the steelbooks) won't be in stores but will be at online sellers. Those who pre-order direct from Synapse will get them as soon as they come to their office but they are the same as what will be sold at etailers. That's how I see it anyway. It's a pretty vague statement in that sense. I am not too tempted by these, I'm long over these films.

Guess we'll find out, but then there is quote:

"At this time, we have no plans to release these two films in standard packaging."

Why do you need a "street date" if you are selling the entire stock yourself?

Maybe Andrew is right and the steelbooks will be available at the Synapse site and other e-tailers but ship from the Synapse site first?

I was really looking forward to getting these, but at $46 each, I don't know anymore...

Hopefully.....the shipping will be free even outside the US to make up for the outrageous pricing, and lack of standard release? I also hope Tenebre and Phenomena won't be given this "special" treatment.

Shipping is $6 (the discs are $39.95 each). I also hope that they don't pull this shit with the Argentos

Can't justify the price for pt 2, but I wouldn't want to just get part 1. Going to have to think long and hard about this one. I understand that these are the MSRPs, and I pay MSRP to Bill at Code Red, but this is tougher for me. Might have to sell off a couple of OOP Twilight Time bds to get these. Hmm...

If you own Christine or Fright Night go for it, people pay silly price for those...

On the subject. I don't care that much about those two, at least certainly not enough to pay almost 50$ to get each of them. My old Anchor Bay DVDs are more than enough (just hate the fact the commentary isn't subtitle as it's hard to understand for me with the accent).

As long as they won't do something like that with the Nikkatsu films...

Edit: Surprise to see they charge only 7$ to ship to Canada (wich is reasonable those days), but as I said the SRP is too much for me.

This. I saw on Synapse facebook that they pointed out that the MRSP on Criterion's Blu-rays are $39.95, but they ignore that Criterion charges $31.96 for those titles on their website. Anyway, I'm not really upset about the MSRP, but about these being limited editions and exorbitant shipping costs.
