  • Roots Of Evil aka Die Brut des Bösen

ROOTS OF EVIL aka Die Brut des Bí¶sen (Christian Anders & Antonio Tarruella, 1979). Schlager-slinger who looks like Gretzky and dresses like Skywalker runs a karate school threatened by evil dwarf drug lord Deep Roy's evil karate thug gang. Contains an opening song, graveyard beatdown, heroin hotshot murder, sexy lady dances, homoerotic training montage with leather bondage shorts, and a satisfyingly downbeat ending. Almost a TEUTONIC CONNECTION; lacking in ninjas. I watched an undubbed VHS rip; subs/dubs could not improve the greatness of this movie, but I would buy a DVD. I don't think one's available?

There is a shrine here: http://rootsofevil79.freeunix.net

In addition to posters, pics, trivia (Von Bullock's gold Rolls was Anders' car), and other gold, it also provides the lyrics to the theme:

    DEAD END (1979)
    (M: Christian Anders/T: Lucy Neal/Arr.: W. Dies)

    dead end!
lonely is a man, who only got his hands
to show somebody who he is
karate is his life he loves it like a wife
    nothing else for him exists
    but it's a dead end,
    that's going nowhere
    just a dead end,
    but he doesn't care
training every day to learn his master's way
the fight was in his every breath,
but the heart of self-defense was turned into revenge
when he learned about the sensai's death
    but it's a dead end,
    the road to revenge
    just a dead end,
    don't make any sense
he thought he was right whatever the price
ready to fight for the sensai
an eye for an eye he was willing to die
a loser is a man, who doesn't understand
that voilence is the brother of death
his one and only plan was to get the man
who brought his master got injured
    it's a dead end,
    the road to revenge
    just a dead end,
    don't make any sense
he thought he was right whatever the price
ready to fight for the sensai
an eye for an eye he was willing to die
lonely is a man with blood on his hands,
but death is even lonelier still
karate was his life he loved it like a wife
but revenge is the fight that kills
    it's a dead end,
    don't make any sense
    just a dead end,
    the road to revenge
    dead end!
    dead end!

Barry - I hope you don't mind but I split this off to its own special thread. I think more people, myself included, need to be exposed to this movie and I fear it might get lost in the big 'what are you watching' thread.

I guess this is the one sheet for it. He does kinda look like Gretzky. That's endearing to me.

Maybe we should merge this with the man crush thread.

The Turkish poster at the shrine is, as you'd expect, a thing of beauty.

SPOILERS: at one point he catches his tshirt on a thorn bush and has to spend the rest of the movie shirtless like Rambo. Mythic.

SPOILERS: he takes shelter behind a dead wolf. Symbolic?

I like that there's a naked man hiding his wang behind a tophat on that one.
