  • Nearly all of Kino's Bava releases are going OOP because they couldn't come to an agreement with the licensor. Sounds like it wasn't a legal issue, as it was with Arrow, so hopefully someone else will pony up and re-release these.

    • Kim Newman mentioned that he recorded a commentary for The Whip And The Body, speculation is that 88 Films will be reissuing it sooner rather than later.

      • DVD Beaver has a nice A/B comparison up between the older Kino Blu-ray release of Planet Of The Vampires and the new reissue.

          • Coming from 88 Films 3/27/23, from a new restoration.

"Seduction, sadism and sexual obsession – The Whip and the Body is one of the greatest films of legendary director Mario Bava (Hatchet for the Honeymoon; Black Sunday). The equally legendary Christopher Lee (everything from Dracula to The Lord of the Rings) plays Kurt Menliff. He's the black sheep of his family, banished for his wicked, wicked ways. But now he's home, and keen to resume his sadomasochistic affair with his brother's wife Nevenka (Daliah Lavi). So keen, in fact, that not even his untimely death cannot put a stop to his violent lust... A delirious journey into troubled souls, this is arguably the greatest film Bava ever made – and now it's looking better than ever, gorgeously restored from newly discovered film elements. 88 Films are proud to present Bava's masterpiece, finally resplendent in all its gothic splendour."

              • Not Ultra-HD? This is a tougher upgrade to justify. Two separate commentaries? Do people actually listen to them? I prefer the interviews and documentaries.

                  • Arrow reissuing Blood & Black Lace from a new 4k transfer in the UK come September.

                    https://www.arrowfilms.com/blu-ray/b...ition-blu-ray/

SIX MODELS. SIX VICTIMS FOR A CRAZED MASKED KILLER.

The Christian Haute Couture fashion house is a home to models… and backstabbing… and blackmail… and drug deals… and MURDER.

Having established a template for the giallo with The Girl Who Knew Too Much, Mario Bava set about cementing its rules with Blood and Black Lace. In doing so, he created one of the most influential films ever made – an Italian classic that would spearhead the giallo genre, provide a prototype for the slasher movie, and have a huge effect on filmmakers as diverse as Dario Argento and Martin Scorsese.

Newly restored from the original camera negative and presented here in its original uncut form, this new release allows fans to see Blood and Black Lace afresh and offers newcomers the ideal introduction to a major piece of cult filmmaking.

                        • Hopefully they fixed the color timing on this. The B region Arrow rendering was far superior to Kino's last pass at it.

                          • I was on the fence about upgrading to the Blood and Black Lace UHD, but it looks fantastic. The HDR does wonders for this right from the opening. I just want Plaion to make the Planet of the Vampires UHD more widely available as I haven't been able to get that at a sensible price yet.
I'm bitter, I'm twisted, James Joyce is fucking my sister.

                              • If I'm not mistaken, Black Sunday has appeared on Shout Factory's streaming service...so I assume they landed that portion of the Bava titles.

I was right the following Bava titles are on Shout's streaming service:
                                A Bay of Blood
                                Black Sunday
                                Black Sabbath (Italian Language)
                                Kill Baby Kill
                                Lisa and the Devil
                                The Evil Eye
                                Baron Blood
