  • Well, I have to admit that I am quite anal when it comes to picture quality:). I always try to get the best looking version of a movie I like. To each his or her though.

From that capture posted at screen comparison, the only difference between the two is that the Serverin is slightly lighter, nor does it have a uniform noise filter (which looks around 2% in strength) placed over the image:

      GERMAN (top) SEVERIN (bottom)

It's subjective, of course, but I have both blu rays. The German blu ray, despite a smaller file size, looks better to my eyes, particularly in motion.

        • Redemption just announced they're going to release "Dracula's Daughter" on blu.

          • Nice. I love Draculas Daughter. Keep them coming Redemption, I shall buy them all.

            • I see more natural grain in the German, the Severin loses some detail in the process to my eye.
I do think the Severin is a huge upgrade from DVD and the extras are amazingly great, but.....
Maybe depressing is too strong a term, how about distressing? Severin did a similar softening thing on BLOODY MOON, their encoding leaves something to be desired I feel.
They have a larger file size but their encode from the same source as the German BD is noticeably less robust. This is distressing as it is entirely avoidable.
Severin's BD should be equal or perhaps even better when granted a larger file size.

              • I would say, maybe stop highlighting the negative and focus upon the positives, and as I've stated many times. Both VL and SKIE blu releases from Severin are pretty much all positive. I don't care now that the German release is a little better. I don't speak German and the difference in motion I'm sure is minimal. Its hardly like Severins look rough as hell. I'm just repeating myself now.

( hint: I am the guy in the middle :) )

I am very happy with the Severin, but it's just unfortunate their technical efforts are not A+.
The audio issues on SHE KILLED... were also avoidable.

Still, killer time for us Franco fans overall, commentary track on EROTIC RITES from Tim Lucas, and DRACULA' S DAUGHTER being confirmed today is outstanding news.

                  • People seem to be forgetting we're takling about Jess Franco here. We should be happy there's even a company willing to take the risk and release his work on Blu-ray. Although I prefer the grainy version, I'm sure the Severin version looks stunning. Screenshots are just screenshots, they look different than the moving images they create.

Remember when people were nagging about that fact that Virgin Among The Living Dead had too much grain and spots? :)

                    • Just as an experiment, I've took the Severin image from above posted by John and added a 2½% uniform noise filter to it:

                        • I wonder what they are. BU have had some great DVD releases. I'd like Sadomania on Blu, that would be good.

Why when I read that do I hear this (no criticism intended of either POV - I'm still awaiting my copies of Severin's discs)? I'm going to be singing it at work all day now

Anyway ignore the naysayers, Severin have done a wonderful job.

Mondo Macabro also confirmed they are working on Countess Perverse for blu-ray release. Something I was aware of anyhow, but first time they have said it on their facebook page.

                              • If no one ever pointed out the negatives we wouldn't see much improvements.
