I was not used to Franco at the time so I might like it better these days, now that I've seen about 50-60 of his films.
I barely remember anything about the film itself other than my dislike for it. I have some spare cash but the price is a little steep.
I think you should revisit it. I can honestly imagine you not liking it if at the time you weren't familiar with Franco's films. However, even though it is a slow burner, I find that it is quite a haunting film, especially accompanied by the excellent score. Its not in my top tier of most viewed Franco films but When I do watch it, I do quite enjoy it. The blu-ray as with most of Redemption's is a bit hit and miss. Sometimes it looks beautiful, other times a bit rough around the edges but I'm glad I have it in my collection.

    • At the time I'd only seen one or two Franco films and was very much on the fence about watching any more. I toughed it out and grew to appreciate and even love the old Spanish madman. I watched the interview on the "The Demons" disc yesterday and felt a tinge of sadness about the fact that he's gone. He seemed like such a cool entertaining guy. Smart and funny. I will get the "Nightmares Come At Night" disc soon. Still waiting for it to drop below £10. The Redemption disc being hit and miss doesn't bother me much. If I recall correctly the Shriek Show disc looked like ass too.

      • The Redemption Blu of NIGHTMARES... is a worthy improvement over Shriek Show's DVD. It's worth the upgrade for a tenner, I reckon.

It's a good film. I like it a lot. It's one of those Franco pictures that needs to be seen in context though, I think, so it's probably not a good picture if you're 'new' to Franco.

        • You're absolutely right. For curious beginners I always recommend Vampyros Lesbos, She Killed In Ecstacy (too lazy too google spelling) and from there Succubus and the Dietrich stuff. Best to steer clear of the 80's and 90's completely until they're truly hooked on him as a filmmaker. His 80's doesn't do anything for me at all, besides Bloody Moon and Sadomania. The rest of the 80's stuff I've seen (so far) is godawful and his 90's are almost all unwatchable. I did like Dr. Wong though, for some reason and Maricookie provided a few chuckles. I wanted to kill myself during Incubus.

          • I hope to revisit Nightmares later this week. I really like the film, its a nice bridge film from the Harry Towers era into the Soledad films (even though Soledad has a minuscule role). Brilliant performance from Diana Lorys as well.

You have obviously not watched the right 80's films. There are some true gems from his Golden films period. The 90's ...well... I agree on that.

                • While my own preference in terms of Franco's output is for the De Nesle pictures and his 1960s monochrome films, he made some pretty good pictures in the 1980s. His 1990s output is less interesting, although I really love TENDER FLESH and LUST FOR FRANKENSTEIN. I like KILLER BARBY'S too.

I probably haven't. I bought the 80's stuff Severin released and found them awful. Sold all but Bloody Moon. What are some essential 80's Francos?

Kevin Coed: I find MANSION OF THE LIVING DEAD to be very underrated from his 80s stuff.
Personally I absolutely hated it (was bored to tears by it) but to each their own.

I too adore his 60's-70's output. He was truly on fire creatively in that era. I had both Killer Barbys movies but they left me rather indifferent unfortunately.

                      • Of his 80's films I really liked The Sexual Story of O.
It had a gloomy atmosphere, so that in the back of your head you knew something was wrong all the time. And still the ending was like a punch in the gut.

                        • I couldn't stand that film either unfortunately.

                          • I recommend la noche de los sexos abiertos (my favourite 80's), Botas negras latigo de cuero, gemidos du placer, Sex is Crazy, Night of 1000 sexes or even intimate confessions of an exhibitionist.

I like the way you think. That's probably my favorite of his 80's films. I think I've said it before on here but he may have dealt with that type of material before but never in such a downer fashion. That ending really stings, made even more potent by the main musical motif. I wish I could find that music somewhere online.
