  • HOT TRACES OF ST. PAULI (German crime film?)

Anyone seen this? Diabolik has a dvd/cd combo. It looks to be a crime film from 1971 and Horst Frank is in it...that's about all I've come up with. If you look around, there are some sleazy images from the film. Love that title! I bet the soundtrack is groovy too, looks like it's been released by Crippled Dick Hot Wax in the past.

      Main title theme:

Aside from the DVD-CD combo, which is quite expensive, a DVD only edition is due for release in Germany at the end of February. It's much cheaper - 10 Euros, as compared with the 30 Euros of the combo pack.

      No English options though, apparently.

        Here's a plot synopsis:

The dangerous violent criminal Willy Jensen flees from a prison in Hamburg and seeks shelter at his brother Heinz' apartment. Heinz, an honest taxi-driver, believes in his innocence and helps him - until Willy kills another man in a robbery. After an argument Willy takes his wife Vera, who now lives with Heinz, as hostage on his further flight from the police. Heinz feels responsible for his brother and trails him, which makes it look to the police as if he's helping his brother.

There's a torrent going around taken from a German TV broadcast, but again, no English for that version either. This looks like it has potential, but without subs...

That dvd/cd combo at Diabolik claims to have subs but it's 35 bucks...I need to hear some born again testifyin' to shell out that kind of cash before I jump. Also, anyone who's considering getting would be wise to verify those english subs from Diabolik, I bought that X-Rated disc of Tessari's DER BASTARD from them - it was supposed to have english options - and it didn't.

              Yeah, $35 is steep, but....

...the trailer makes it look pretty bad ass.

OFDb confirms subs for the currently-available release: http://www.ofdb.de/view.php?page=fas...323&vid=348580

The cheaper DVD that's forthcoming at the end of Feb may also include them - Amazon Germany's listing may be incomplete. I'd wait till the end of the month before 'biting' on this one - blowing 10 Euros on a blind buy is much easier to swallow than spending 30 Euros (plus postage), even if the cheaper release is sans soundtrack CD :)

Paul and Clive, thanks for confirming the subs. I'll be interested to know if that cheaper edition has them too. Clive, hope you'll give us a report after you see it.

Hi. I have this dvd and can indeed confirm that the film has english subs, no subs on the extras though sadly. This is number 3 in a series of german films released under the name Edition Deutsche Vita by Subkultur Entertainment and I think Filmart too. Number 1 was "Battle Of The Godfathers" (Henry Silva) which came out about a year ago and number 2 is "Wenn Es Nacht Wird Auf Der Reeperbahn" by Rolf Olsen of Bloody Friday infamy. Sorry I dont know the english title for the film if there ever was one. It was released at the same time as Fluchtweg St.Pauli. These are very nice releases, remind me of the camera obscura level of class, with a bunch of extras on 'em for the german speaker. All have english subs for the feature itself.

Edit: Battle of the Godfathers has english language track not subs. 2 versions of the film on the release, the english track is on one of the versions.

I enjoyed all these films a lot, I thought ".....Reeperbahn" was especially good and sleazy.

UK buyers can get these from strangevice.co.uk in Scotland. Good service and fast shipping, that's where I got my copies of these from.

Thanks for the info... you've just emptied my wallet!

Are these films connected in some way or are they just unrelated late-era krimis?

Hi Clive. I don't think they can be classed as krimis, these are a lot more gritty and street-crime concerned than the krimis I have seen. There was quite a few more of these films made, starring the likes of Horst Frank, Herbert Fux, Curd Jurgens, etc, set in Hamburg and St.Pauli in particular. Whether it's accurate to call them a "St.Pauli film" genre or not I dont know but it's what i've been calling them since finding out about them a few years ago. I can give you some names of others later today if you like when i'm not a work and have a bit more time. I've seen a couple more that have been fansubbed and struggled through a couple more in german. I recall a german speaker telling me that these would be tricky to subtitle as they are full of heavily accented, local dialect driven dialogue.
