  • Second Sight Releasing Haute Tension / High Tension

No real details yet but they've announced that it is in the works, I'd assume for UHD but don't know for sure.

This is an odd one for me, I saw it when it came out on DVD. And then I got the BD years later for Christmas or something; let's just say that a rewatch isn't a revelation, like, "Now that I know the ending, this part makes sense!". There's so much in this film with the switched perspective that doesn't work on subsequent viewings. It's nice looking, and I remember being impressed by the gore, but it's really just a lazy Aja film that thinks it's smarter than it is.

Random story: I went to see this one on its original theatrical release in the UK, under the 'Switchblade Romance' title, straight after a really terrible/traumatic first day at a new job, which had left me with a really bad headache.

I didn't know anything about the film, but based on the title and some very misleading blurb in the cinema's programme booklet, I was under the impression it was some kind of light-hearted teen-horror type thing, so I thought it might cheer me up, or help with my headache. Long story short: it did not.

Through the haze of the terrible state in which I emerged from that screening, I also remember feeling that the gimmick/twist didn't really work at all, and that the movie wasn't half as clever as it thought it was. I've never gone back to check.

I first saw this on a censored Korean DVD. Seeing as the only point to this film is the gore, it was deeply unsatisfying. I did eventually pick up the UK Blu for a few quid just to see what I was missing, but I still wasn't impressed. I think the only positive thing was that it got me into Muse, I'd seen them at a very wet Reading festival the year before and thought they were a bit wanky, but this made me realise that New Born kicks arse.

I'd say his whole filmography is underwhelming. I remember when HAUTE TENSION came out he was being touted as the "next big thing" but all of his subsequent films have been disappointing. I watched PIRANHA 3D again recently and it's awful. I didn't like the HILLS remake because it was too much like the original. I'd say the best thing he's done is P2 and he was only the screenwriter on that one.

Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

Oh, I didn't realize that I'd given Aja credit and that by saying, "Lazy Aja film" that it might sound like I was saying it was unique to his category. No, I'm pretty much not a fan of his at all, I don't think that his films have any real vision; or any kind of vision that I want to subscribe to.

He needs to go back & do more French language films instead of shitty Hollywood films.

Bummer. I watched High Tension for the first time in 2010 and loved it. Enjoyed it just as much with a rewatch 2015. I thought it was clever. Maybe its because I avoid a lot of torture porn film (never bothered with a SAW, CENTIPEDE or HOSTEL) , but I found High Tension to be shocking and thrilling. I'll have to give it another spin and see if it holds up.

I just think of this as a solid, gory slasher. Not a fan of thay subgenre so it met my low expectations.

I quite like Aja's fairly recent Crawl though, his killer alligator movie, I found it fun and tightly constructed.

As usual, I think I'm in the minority with Aja, as on balance I've really liked his work, and always look forward to his next project. Going chronologically: yep, HIGH TENSION (which was kind of a ripoff of Dean Koontz's INTENSITY) could have been in the tortporn category, but the twist was so ridiculous, it made this slasher film a lot more fun, to my sensibilities anyway. Except for the sequel-seeking open ending, I found THE HILLS HAVE EYES to be one of the better remakes, especially since it put a fresh coat of (red) paint on what was one of my favorites at midnight shows in the late 70's. P2 (producer/writer) is a nice Christmas psycho offering that warrants repeat seasonal viewings. MIRRORS is probably the only one of his films I thought was complete garbage. I haven't seen (and don't intend to see) PIRANHA 3D.

MANIAC (producer/writer) had a surprisingly disturbing performance by Elijah Wood, and it's also one of the better horror remakes. 180 degrees away from that, the underrated and humorous HORNS is kind of on the mainstream half of the spectrum so maybe not appealing to fans of his other works, but (with the exception of some questionable CGI toward the end) I thoroughly enjoyed it. Both THE PYRAMID and THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR (each producer only) had a few moments of eeriness, yet I probably wouldn't give an enthusiastic recommendation of either. CRAWL was very competently-made, though perhaps it wasn't quite innovative enough for me to add it to my collection. And the recent OXYGEN is an intense Netflix-distributed sci-fi release, with a literally claustrophobic and breath-taking scenario I found quite satisfying.
                      VHS will never die!

I also enjoyed PS2, Hills and Maniac.
