  • BFI Flipside Releasing The Ballad Of Tam Lin

No details yet aside from this blurb in their latest email.

"Out in time for Halloween, the 45th release in the BFI Flipside cult film series sees THE BALLAD OF TAM LIN (1970) arrive on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK. Part folk horror, part Blowup-style Swinging Sixties critique, it was the first and only film directed by Hollywood actor Roddy McDowall (Planet of the Apes). Starring Ava Gardner, Ian McShane and Joanna Lumley, it features spectacular cinematography by Academy Award-winner Billy Williams and music by folk rock legends Pentangle."
    Rock! Shock! Pop!

I already own a blu of this, so am unlikely to require another one, but still thrilled to see the BFI releasing this fantastic film. Might watch it again soon, just... because.

Well, scratch that -- looks like I will be buying the BFI release after all, because I got my Olive Films copy out this evening to give it another spin, and the disc appears to have developed some 'disc rot' type issue - has a big splotch and some discolouration on the underside, and won't play anymore. Never had that with a blu-ray before. I mean, it's just been quietly sitting in its case in a cool, dry place for years. Hope it's not contagious.

Anyone else had any experience of this?

I've got the Olive disc, I'll check it on Sunday.

Thanks for checking. I've had a look at some other Olive discs of similar vintage, some other discs that were stored close-by on the same shelf etc, and thankfully all seem fine. Strange stuff - could just be a 'dud' disc, but usually problems with those are obvious straight away rather than appearing over time...

My copy's ok. No marks on the disc. I chapter skipped and then played it at x32 speed with no freezing or other issues. I got this as soon as it was released so mine would be the original batch just in case it's a specific pressing issue.

Depending on the extras I might wait for it to hit 8.99 and get the BFI version.

Thanks again agent999. Hopefully the problem with my disc is just some weird one-off (fingers crossed).

That's quite the cast and I'm a fan of Pentangle so I'll be looking into this.
