  • Gothic Fantastico: Four Italian Tales Of Terror

    Coming From Arrow Video 10/18/22.

While Mario Bava remains the best-known purveyor of Italian Gothic horror, many other filmmakers tried their hand at the form throughout the 1960s. Gothic Fantastico presents four titles from this classic period, all of which demonstrate Italy's ability to expand genre beyond the classic literary monsters that dominated elsewhere. Gaslighting abounds in Massimo Pupillo's Lady Morgan's Vengeance - a tale of romance and mystery sprinkled with sadism and the supernatural - as newlywed Sir Harold Morgan tries to destroy his bride with help from his sinister maid. Meanwhile, the perverse influence of Poe is used to great effect in Alberto De Martino's The Blancheville Monster - a tale of family curses and madmen in the attic, as Emilie de Blancheville returns home to her brother Roderic and finds her own family out for her blood. Mino Guerinni's The Third Eye features an early role for Italian cult icon Franco Nero and a plot that borrows elements from Hitchcock, layered with a whiff of necrophilia. Finally, Damiano Damiani's The Witch takes a more avant-garde approach, when a young historian is lured to work for an ageing woman, only to be held captive when he becomes obsessed with her beautiful daughter. Madness, obsession and messed up families are the order of the day in these four lesser-known monochrome gems from Italy's peak Gothic period, restored in 2K from their original negatives for the first time alongside an array of in-depth extras.

I'm loath to give Arrow any more money after screwing me on the Donnie Darko replacement, but fuck me, this looks good! Maybe I should shoplift it.
I'm bitter, I'm twisted, James Joyce is fucking my sister.

Unless they totally botch it, pretty sure I'm gonna need to grab this.

anybody seen lady morgan and blancheville monster?

I remember being bored by third eye and never finishing it. la strega in amore is pretty good though (maybe even a minor gem), but not enough to pull the trigger on that set.

I've seen The Blancheville Monster, and it's okay. I'm a fan of Alberto De Martino, though, and I can sit through most of his stuff. I'm pretty shocked anyone is giving this film special treatment. I think most of you will find it dull.

Regarding Blancheville, out of the set I should imagine it's the most seen having been in some of those public domain multi movie packs. I enjoyed it.

I remember 'Lady Morgan' being pretty goofy and low rent, easily the least good of the three gothic horrors Massimo Pupillo directed... but it still has its charms. I recall thinking it had some of same camp/parodic vibe as 'Bloody Pit of Horror' (perhaps unintentionally?), and I think it was also shot at Palazzo Borghese, which helps. (Could be wrong on that, but it has a great shooting location either way.)

It's a shame Arrow couldn't have amped up this box set by including Pupillo's 'Terror Creatures from the Grave' / '5 Tombe per un Medium' - would be great to see a proper HD scan of that one some time.
